Friday Family Update
October 14, 2022
Dear Families,
Did you know that students in grades K-4 are assessed three times per year in literacy and mathematics using screening tools approved by the D.R.R.S.D.? This information is used to monitor student progress toward grade-level benchmarks and state learning standards. These assessments also help teachers inform their instruction by determining areas of focus. At this point in the year, teachers have finished their beginning-of-the-year assessments and have started to identify students who would benefit from targeted interventions and enrichment. In the past, the Commonwealth of Massachusetts has called this data-driven process, Response to Intervention (RtI). More recently, when schools incorporate the needs of the whole child, including their social-emotional and behavioral needs, it is called MTSS (Multi-Tiered Systems of Support).
This year at PRES, we have instituted a grade-level common intervention and enrichment block (CIB) for thirty minutes per day. We will use an “all hands on deck” approach to support ALL of our students during this time. Our reading specialists, general and special education teachers, and paraprofessionals will work together to identify, support, and instruct students in priority areas identified by our assessments. This will assist us in moving students beyond their current level of performance.
By dedicating this time in our master schedule to intervention and enrichment in core academic content, we ensure that all students are supported consistently, in smaller instructional groups, and at their “just right” level. The CIB also allows teachers to specialize in areas where they are most effective, allowing students to access higher-quality instruction. Students will be grouped according to their specific needs during the CIB block. Therefore, some students may work with a different teacher other than their homeroom teacher during this time. The staff member supporting your child may change during the school year. The goal is to be responsive in meeting students' needs, continuously monitor progress, and change the instructional focus as needed.
If your child should require more support than the common intervention block allows, your child’s classroom teacher will be in touch with you to discuss other necessary interventions as indicated. As always, if you have any questions, please feel free to contact us anytime. We are happy to help.
Sincerely,
Mrs. Kristine Kefor, Principal
