Introduction
We have made it past the 100th day of school already! There are a lot of great things happening at Palmyra that we want you to know about. In this issue, we are highlighting our 5th and 6th grade AVID program and our after school classes that extend our students' learning beyond the school day!
AVID - Advancement Via Individual Determination
We are in our second year of implementation of the AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination) program at Palmyra. AVID provides a structure in the classroom that helps to teach students organization, note-taking, and critical thinking skills. We are preparing students for their future in middle school, high school, and college! We are working towards college and career readiness for all of our students. Next year, we plan to expand the program to 4th grade!
Featured AVID Strategies
Each month, students from one of our 5th and 6th grade classes, share a featured AVID strategy with our parents in our PTA and ELAC meetings. Just in case you can't make it to our meetings, you can read about some of the strategies below!
AVID Binders
We provide our 5th and 6th grade students with 3 ring binders, dividers, and pencil pouches. They use these supplies to keep their work organized and easily accessible!
One-pagers
Our AVID classes create "One-pagers" to organize their research and take notes on a subject. In January, our 6th grade students in Ms. Thomas' class worked with some of our first graders to research about bats and then helped them create a one-pager to present the information they learned.
Impromptu Speeches
Impromptu speeches are a fun way to have students create structured communication “on the fly”. Students choose topics and are given approximately 30 seconds to prepare a one minute speech. This requires students to think creatively in a short amount of time and develops their ability to speak in front of a group.
After School Programs and Classes
We have some great opportunities for students to extend and enrich their learning after school. We also want to use these opportunities to engage students in learning about different cultures and new experiences! Although program space is limited, our goal is to provide something for everyone and that interested students will get the chance to participate in at least one activity throughout the year. If you have ideas, feel free to share!
Karate
4th-6th grade students are training with Master Aguilar and learning Karate.
Origami
6th grade students are learning about the Japanese culture and language in our Origami class after school on Wednesdays.
Ballet Folklorico
Students in 1st and 2nd grade will learn about Mexican culture and dance with Mrs. Gonzalez on Mondays. We look forward to their performances in the Spring!
Robotics Club
Our Palmyra Robotics Club started three years ago and has grown to a group of 24 students in grades 4-6. We have 4 VEX IQ Clawbots being built and will begin scrimmages to prepare for the annual Robotics Showcase at Santiago Canyon College on March 24th.
Track Team
Students in 1st-6th grade are working hard on Mondays after school to prepare and train for the Community of Orange Foundation Games. The Foundation Games are at Fred Kelley Stadium on April 21/22. Come cheer our students on!
Academic Chess!
Our Academic Chess class is coming back in March! 4th - 6th grade Students of all skill level can come and have fun while learning chess and improving their critical thinking skills. Watch for the flyer to come home in the Friday folder.
