RSU 57 Community Newsletter
February 6, 2023
Message from the Superintendent
Dear RSU 57 Community,
I hope this newsletter finds you having managed the extreme cold weather our region faced on Friday and Saturday. Thankfully that extreme cold appears to be behind us for now and a bit of decent weather is forecasted for the week ahead.
We’ve reached the month of February and with this we are moving full steam ahead into the second half of the school year. This time of year also marks the conclusion of our Winter Sports seasons and there have been a number of successes to celebrate. Our cheering squad performed exceptionally at the regional meet and will move on to the State Competition. Congratulations to our cheering team! In addition to this, our MHS wrestling team earned the Class A Duals Meet State Championship! Congratulations to our wrestling team on this fantastic accomplishment. We look forward to our wrestling team competing in the Southern Maine Regional this weekend and wish them the best of luck!
February is a bit of an abbreviated month for school as we have our winter break starting Monday, February 20th. Students will have that week off from school and we look forward to welcoming our students back on Monday, February 27th. I hope that our students enjoy a safe, healthy, and fun break from school and return ready to re-engage with their learning on the 27th.
I wish all of you the very best.
Dr. Stephen Marquis
Miss Haynes' Kindergarten class at Lyman Elementary is continuing their unit of study on owls by dissecting owl pellets. Students had a great time identifying the different types of bones found in the pellet to determine what owls like to eat. (pictured above)
Waterboro Elementary fifth grade Student Helpers demonstrated an incredible act of kindness by brining nearly 800 items to the Waterboro Food Pantry. All food items were donated by WES families in just three and a half days! Thank you to the amazing RSU 57 community for making this possible! (pictured above)
Third, fourth, and fifth graders at Alfred Elementary learned about recycling through a presentation and demonstration by ECOMaine representatives. Students learned about how recycling is processed through the plant in Portland, and competed in a recycling relay to test their knowledge of how to properly dispose of common items. Every student received a reusable bag generously donated by Hannaford to take home. (pictured above)
Massabesic Middle School sixth graders will visit Portland's Gulf of Maine Research Institute (GMRI) in January and February to participate in their LabVenture program. 10,000 Maine fifth and sixth graders will experience this free, hands-on, interactive trip this year thanks to GMRI.
Pictured above are students from Team Kennebec, with other sixth grade teams to follow soon.
Students at Massabesic High School have started their next new mural. "Laying in the base colors and learning how to work on such a large scale is a new world for them...", says Lowansa Tompkins, an art teacher at MHS. "I'm sure it's going to be amazing!"
Pictured above are students working on the mural and the reference they are working from.
