A note from Ms. Walsh
Happy Friday Mountain View. September is Suicide Prevention Month. Suicide Prevention Month is a time to raise awareness for a topic that is difficult to talk about and is often stigmatized. The National Alliance for Mental Health’s “Together for Mental Health” campaign advocates for more mental health resources and crisis response systems. Over the summer the 10-digit suicide prevention hotline transitioned to “988:” the new number for suicide, mental health, and substance abuse crises. This easy-to-remember number is available to call or text in times of need. This transition allows for better access to mental health resources, and crisis intervention in times of need, and is a major milestone in the journey toward better mental health awareness and resources.
Suicide Prevention Month is also a time to remind ourselves and those around us that our Mental Health matters, and should be a priority. Take the time this weekend to check in with how your children are feeling. Ask them to share with you any challenges they have recently faced, any difficult feelings they have been experiencing, and remind them that communication about our feelings is important and that they are NEVER alone. Work together to brainstorm a list of trusted adults and family members they are comfortable sharing their struggles with, and remind them of the importance of seeking help when they are in need. As parents/guardians, make sure you take the time to take care of yourselves, too- you can’t pour from an empty cup! Enjoy your weekend.
