Covington First Graders Present to the Board of Trustees
These enterprising children formed teams and collaborated to create a store name and brainstorm an item to sell. They then created those items and crafted marketing plans to promote their products to their fellow students.
"This project really allowed our students to share their academic strengths with their classmates and foster new skills as they learned from one another," said Mrs. Kasso. The project touched on many academic areas including literacy and math. Collaboration and creativity were also important skills the students harnessed to bring their products to market and sell them to their customers. The students also learned to budget by spending their pretend money to buy products in the various stores in their classroom marketplace.
Our experienced and innovative teachers create amazing project-based learning experiences like The Simulated Marketplace so that students hone their academic skills through creativity and collaboration. Thank you to Covington teachers Michelle Gibo and Suzanne Kasso for providing an excellent education to our students!
Community Engagement Update
Now, the district's independent consultant, MIG, will compile a report to share the level of support for the community-generated facilities solutions that surfaced during the process. MIG will deliver this report at the Board's January 27 meeting. We invite and encourage the public to attend.
Following the report, the Board will begin to evaluate the community-generated facilities ideas by using its Guiding Principles to weigh the advantages of each possibility. To ensure transparency and public engagement, the Board will publish a calendar so that the community is aware of meetings that will address this topic.

2020 Census: Students and Families Count
Last night, the Board received a presentation about the 2020 Census and its importance for our community. School-aged children are an essential component of the census, and often, families forget to include school-aged children when they complete the census. That is why the Los Altos School District will work to ensure that our families participate in the census and include their school-aged children on their census questionnaire.
Households can respond to the 2020 Census online, over the phone, or through a paper questionnaire starting in March 2020. The public will have until July 30, 2020 to complete the census questionnaire form and it is critical that every resident of LASD--including children of any age--be counted.
The Board passed a resolution declaring its support for Santa Clara County's 2020 Census measures to count all of our County's residents.

2020-21 Board Appointments
Last night the Board voted to appoint Bryan Johnson as the new Board President, with Vaishali Sirkay as the Vice President. Additionally, Board members volunteered to serve on various committees that serve a number of areas of focus for our district. The Board will take a final vote on appointments to the various committees at its next meeting on January 13.
