Five New Twists for Online Discussions
By: Kristin Kowal and Laurie Berry
Introduction
QUOTE: Most online courses have what we call “traditional discussions,” which follow the read-write-post (and perhaps reply to a peer or two) pattern. Even if the discussion questions are interesting, both instructors and students can get tired of the same old routine. We recommend trying any of these five “twists” on traditional discussions in the next online course you teach. These activities encourage student engagement and critical thinking—and they might help you feel more connected to your students as well!
The “Twists”
- Adding images of examples
- External discussion and reflection
- Debate
- Role-play
- Fishbowl
Academic Leader
Academic Leader provides the information deans, chairs, and other academic decision-makers use for effective leadership within their colleges or departments and fulfil their institution’s primary missions of teaching and scholarship.
Here's an example from Academic Leader.
Seven Big Ideas for Academic Leaders: How You Lead Matters!
By Dr Laurie Elish-Piper
Big Idea 1: Optimism matters
Big Idea 2: Kindness and care matter
Big Idea 3: Communication matters
Big Idea 4: Intentionality matters
Big Idea 5: Relationships matter
Big Idea 6: Collaboration matters
Big Idea 7: Inspiration matters
Final thoughts
QUOTE: That’s quite a list, but as I’m reminded daily, being an academic leader is a huge responsibility. And I have one final big idea to share—remember to breathe, smile, and take care of yourself so you can get up tomorrow and do it again!
Laurie Elish-Piper, PhD, is dean, distinguished teaching professor, and presidential engagement professor in the College of Education at Northern Illinois University.
