English-
We have been singing away with our “Preposition Song”. They have really belted this one out!
Our research paper has begun. The students will be researching, writing and presenting on an author. There is a very detailed calendar in their packets that should have already been signed by you. Please be on the lookout for the packet and all the information for this project will be Google Classroom. This project will count heavily on term 3! So, make sure your child stays with the calendar and any updates that go along with it.
Due Dates for the Research Paper, Project and Presentations:
A, B, C blocks are due on: March 11
E and F blocks are due on: March 12
Reading-
The adventures of Harris and Me by Gary Paulsen continue in Reading. Students have been incorporating their reading strategies when reading in partners as well as listening or reading independently. Harris, an energetic 9 year old has been entertaining us with his farm life and shenanigans. The students have been doing a good job of answering reading comprehension questions as well as tackling new vocabulary words. Spelling and vocab quizzes will use words from the story. Check Aspen for updated grades. We will continue with the story in class and will work on alpha boxes as a review project. A final test on the book will be announced at a later date.
Please remind your student that if they are absent it is very important to get caught up on all make-up work. We encourage students to stay after school if they ever need any help.
Thank you for the support!
Math-
We took our first test of term 3 before the vacation. All of the tests can be found on Edulastic online. We will be after school for anyone who needs to go over the test, and we will be asking some of the students to stay after to review their tests. For the next couple of weeks we are going to be working on inequalities, probability, and some topics in Geometry (circles, parallelograms, & 3 dimensional shapes). We will have our next test on Wednesday March 27 for A, B, & C blocks and on Thursday March 28 for E & F blocks.
Since I coach JV softball in the spring, my time after school will not be as open as it was earlier in the year starting March 18. Mrs. Perrault will continue to be available on Tuesdays and Wednesdays after school and on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday during Powerblock. Keep checking Google classroom for the TenMarks and IXL assignments.
Social Studies-
We finally finished Ancient Egypt and the students did very well. What a great unit! We just started Ancient Greece and it is already very exciting! We traveled to an in-class Greece Museum and studied many aspects of the civilization. We had the “Ms. Martin’s Olympics” Activity where we all competed as various Greek city-states, it was fun for all. Mrs. Thomas visited the class again and we did a really difficult BREAKOUT EDU Box! The students worked so well with one another, I am so glad we could experience this activity together! Throughout the unit, we will be focusing on the geography, the culture, and history of Ancient Greece. This is a really exciting time in Social Studies Class. Keep checking Google Classroom for homework and class information. As always, students can make up homework for full credit, they need to turn it in during powerblock or set up a time after school. Any questions please let me know.
A Reminder- The Coloring Contest admissions are due on Feb. 27th! Students should only work on it if they are all caught up in all their classes. One lucky winner will walk away with a 5 DOLLAR GIFT CARD to their choice of Dunks or Cumby’s! Other winners will be eligible for homework passes. This is a fun addition to class this year. Winter can be a bit gloomy, let’s brighten it up with some color! :)
Science-
What a great month we had studying ecology! We have discussed food chains and food webs, along with energy flow and the energy pyramid. We made our own food chains and traced the energy flow through an ecosystem. Next, we learned about symbiotic relationships: mutualism, commensalism, and parasitism, and created “symbiosis want ads” for one organism in a symbiotic relationship. We have moved on and are currently researching biomes, and reporting on climates and organisms that are common to each of the different biomes. From this point, we will move on to our study of populations within ecosystems, as well as begin to go over different types of cycles on Earth, including the Carbon, Oxygen and Nitrogen Cycles. We will also take a more in - depth look at the process of photosynthesis, and discover why it is such an essential life process. Please continue to check Google Classroom for additional assignments, announcements, and resources!
