We’re Learning About:
Math: We learned how to add within 10. Students used a variety of tools, manipulatives and number partners in order to solve addition problems. Students practiced writing and identifying an equation.
Reading: This week we read the text “People We Celebrate.” Learners practiced making connections and summarizing to help us better understand what we are reading. We used text evidence to make connections between two people. We also learned the letter Ll and it’s sound.
Writing: Writers started the Narrative writing process. We learned that a narrative can be a made up story, or it can be based on something that happened in real life. Students started with brainstorming different ideas, making a plan for their story and now are beginning to draft their beginning, middle and end. We also continued to practice writing complete sentences with capitalization and end punctuation.
Social Studies & Science: We learned about the difference between a globe and map. We talked about different signs and symbols we see around our neighborhood and how they help us get around.

We’re Learning About:
Math: This week in math we participated in the math in action task for unit 5. The students had to plan out which pet toys they would like to donate to a pet shelter. Then, they had to write equations for the total number for pet toys donated. The students also took their math assessment on Friday.
Reading: This week we read a nonfiction text called “Using Timelines”. We worked hard to find the main topic and supporting details of different timelines. We even created our own timeline!
Writing: The students have been working hard on planning and drafting their How-To writing. They have learned how to write a topic sentence, the steps and a conclusion statement. This week the students are also reviewing plural nouns in grammar. We learned that when a word ends with an s,x, z, ch, or th you need to add an -es to the end of the singular noun to make it plural.
Social Studies: This week in Social Studies we learned what national symbols are and what some of them stand for. We specifically learned about the Statue of Liberty, the bald eagle, the White House and the American Flag.

We’re Learning About:
Math:This week the students completed the mid-unit assessment. They also continued learning more about adding and subtracting 1 and 2-step story problems that involve length.
Reading: We read an informational text about “Primary Sources”. Students annotated their thinking about the main topic and focus of each section. They used text features to help them understand more about the text.
Writing: After completing a graphic organizer to help plan out their nonfiction narrative letter, students began writing their first draft of the letter. Students also practiced reading and writing contractions.
Social Studies & Science: We started to learn about geography and how to use maps.

We’re Learning About:
Math: We took this week to do a review of math topics covered thus far in third grade for preparation of the math portion of the FORWARD test, which will begin next week. If you are looking for something to do this weekend, please check your child’s folder for additional math practice!
Reading:
Writing: Students are continuing to work on writing their historical fiction piece. This week we focused on brainstorming events for our stories and “bringing them to life” by including more details so that our reader also feels as though they are part of the historical event.

We’re Learning About:
Math: This week, we learned about angles including how to measure and draw angles.
Reading: This week we used context clues to determine the meaning of vocabulary words, analyzed sequence and comparison structures in text, inferred main ideas and determined how graphic features add to meaning in “The Chinese Railroad Workers.”
Phonics: Students will focus on homophones. In the link attached you will find a quick guide to help identify this week's spelling patterns. Feel free to use the list of words (word bank) as a way to help students practice the different spelling patterns!
Writing: Students began drafting their historical fiction pieces, making their plans come to life. Students focused on establishing a situation and introducing their characters, using description to develop characters and story events, use dialogue, and provide a sense of closure to their story.
Science: We finished up our learning on weathering and erosion this week and learned the process of something becoming a fossil.

FORWARD EXAM- We have our last two assessments on April 15th and 16th.
Connell- In Lesson 5, students learned about healthy and unhealthy friendship qualities. They practiced how to show positive qualities to others as well as how to form and maintain positive relationships. They also practiced spotting unhealthy qualities in friends. Handout
Haynes- In Lesson 6, students learned all about peer pressure and how to resist negative peer pressure. Students were able to role play and identify strategies they can use in different situations. Handout

We’re Learning About:
Math: 5th graders are learning some key concepts to get ready for the Forward Exam, such as numerical expressions, patterns, and measurement conversions to answer word problems.
Reading: This week we focused on a new text called “Native Americans in the Revolution”. With the passage we determined two or more central ideas, compared and contrasted the overall structure of events, and identified how our author used reasons and evidence to support.
Writing: Students are learning how to write their own historical fiction pieces. This week they began drafting their writing focusing on making their opening interesting and engaging and using description and dialogue to develop characters and story events.
Science: Scholars began their Ecosystems unit, which will culminate on our Clean Water Plant and Fox River field trip.

Math FORWARD - Fifth graders will be taking the Math portion of the WI Forward the week of April 14th. As always, please make sure your student comes to school with a fully charged iPad and a healthy snack.
Field Trip - Our field trip to E.B Shurt Environmental Ed. will be on Tuesday May 20th. Thank you to those of you who volunteered to chaperone. We are no longer accepting volunteers for this trip. Thank you all for considering.
