Parent Mentor Minutes
March 2023
Time Keeps "March"ing on...
Long time, no see...I know! The new year has made me as busy as ever both at home and work, it seems as though that may be true for a lot of us!
March is Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month. If you are on social media and you follow people or organizations who are advocates for the disability community, your feeds may be flooded with photos and stories of families and individuals who are breaking barriers and blazing paths to make the world a more inclusive place--and that is great! If a person isn't on social media, they may not even know that such a month exists. So, how is awareness spread when it's not on television, or the radio, or on Twitter, Facebook or TikTok?
Awareness is spread by you and I every single day. It is spread during drop off and pick up at school; it is spread at the school-sponsored activities our families attend; it is spread in every IEP/ETR meeting we attend; it is spread when we take that family trip to the grocery store, to the restaurant, to church, etc. Together, we show the world how to see our children, how to interact with them. We are the example. When we presume intellect and competence, we create awareness. And when we create awareness, we start to create acceptance.
And that is what we should want for all children: acceptance.
So, stay the course, my friends! Whether by choice or simply by default, you are the change the world needs to see!
