Happy New Year! It's great to welcome our students and staff back to school after our winter break! I trust you and your families had an enjoyable time spent with one another and those you love.

As we enter back into the school routine we look forward to all that our spring semester brings including the introduction of 5th grade band, new books to read, a spring concert, and so much more!

As winter weather arrives, be sure YOU stay in the know! Earliest notifications will be available through our Solon App! Download the app to your smartphone or other device and be the first IN THE KNOW!

Once you download the app, be sure to set notifications to ensure you are alerted to any weather related schedule changes! Here's how:

1. Download the app (see image in upper right corner)
2. With the app open, tap in the 3 lines to the bottom left of your screen
3. After completing step 2, tap on the "settings" gear wheel in the lower right of your screen
4. When a new menu appears, tap on "Push Notifications"
5. Select the notifications you wish to receive (district, by school)
6. When finished selecting, tap "done"

It's that easy!

Now is also a good time to check that your email and phone number are up-to-date in our Powerschool system. To do this, please log into your Powerschool account, click on "forms" and then edit your contact information.

During the month of December, students at SIS learned about generosity and how to be generous with their time, talents and gifts. They worked to learn that generosity is the act of giving without expecting anything in return. Mrs. Pentico taught them about empathy in their guidance units and helped them to understand that empathy in action is compassion.

Our Spartans of the Month were chosen by recognizing those students who continuously demonstrated acts of generosity through the school. Mrs. Holtz announced the Spartan of the Month prior to our winter break and students were acknowledged at our school wide assembly on Dec. 21st and were treated to lunch out after break to celebrate!

During the month of December, our SIS students and families came on strong in the generosity department! It was a TOUGH battle between 4th and 5th grade. 4th grade came on strong in the beginning but 5th grade bested them in the end! Together, our SIS students donated just over 57,000 pennies, or about $571 to the Solon Senior Support Group! Simply amazing!

The first of February, some of our 4th grade students, who have been chosen at random, will be participating in NAEP testing. 4th grade parents have had some communication sent out about this testing previously. However, as we approach the test, I wanted to share a little more info with parents to help everyone better understand the purpose and reason behind our participation in NAEP testing.

School lunch will be free again this year for ALL students. You can access the menus on our school website HERE.

As the weather continues to drop and we prepare for the potential of snow, please keep the following in mind:

• Recess is held outdoors as long as the real feel is 10° or higher.
• Students can ALWAYS use encouragement to wear their coats, gloves, and hats outside.
• It's a good idea to write your child's name in his/her personal belongings.
• When snow begins to fall, students will need boots and snow pants to go off of the concrete during recess.
