A Note From Our Nurse
Why Reading is Good for your Health
A message from Wendy Costanzo, RN
As any avid book reader can tell you, immersing yourself in a great gook can make your brain come alive. It sounds romantic, but science is now proving this to be true.
When we read, not only are we improving memory and empathy, but research has shown that reading makes us feel better and more positive too. Science has shown that reading has some amazing health benefits, including helping with depression, cutting stress and reducing the chances of Alzheimer’s later in life.
Reading strengthens your brain. When you read a story or a book you have to remember a lot of things. The plot, the characters, etc. Therefore, your brain’s short-term memory and recall capabilities improve. The brain is like a muscle, reading helps exercise this muscle and helps improve brain power.
Reading improves your health. Researchers have demonstrated that reading can reduce stress by up to 68%! Creating a bedtime ritual of reading a book before bed signals your brain it is time to wind down and go to sleep. However, this only applies to real books as screens like e-readers and tablets can actually keep you awake longer and actually hurt your sleep.
A children’s book exposes a child to 50% more words than watching a television show. Reading at home actually helps boost school performance. Exposure to books also increases a child’s vocabulary, can help raise self-esteem and helps build good communication skills.
It’s never too late to begin to take advantage of the many physical and psychological benefits awaiting you in the pages of a good book. Unplug and enjoy!
