School News for Residents of Kimberly Area School District

October 2023
Vol. 11, Issue 16
Board Meeting Summary 10/9/23
- Bob Mayfield, Superintendent, on behalf of Jackie DePeau, Principal of Kimberly High School, sought approval of the Start College Now and Early College Credit requests for the second semester of the 2023-2024 school year. The Board approved seven student requests for ten different courses totalling 31 college credits. Students will be taking classes at Fox Valley Technical College as well as Northeast Wisconsin Technical College to earn college and High School credits simultaneously.
- Superintendent Bob Mayfield also presented the Third Friday enrollment data, confirming the trend of declining enrollment. Overall enrollment is down by 115 Full-Time Equivalents (FTE). This decrease in enrollment translates into significant financial decreases for the District. It's noteworthy that despite numerous residential developments within the District, student enrollment from these areas remains low. Open enrollment, students attending our district from other areas, as well as those continuing to attend their previous school district after moving here, both continue to rise steadily, but do not offset the overall decline. The decline in enrollment poses a substantial challenge for future budget planning.
- Dawn Ludwig, Director of Human Resources, shared information on self-funding the District's health insurance. Self-funding would give the District more control over rising insurance costs, while still offering a wide-variety of provider options. She reviewed the difference between fully funded, the District's current model, and self-funding. A self-funded model encourages members to be consumers of their healthcare, offers a high-quality network of providers at the lowest cost, offers bundled services and cost-reductions on prescription medications. The Board approved a motion to allow administration to further explore self-funded insurance options for the 2024-25 plan year.
- Bob Mayfield, Superintendent, reviewed the first reading of policy 5114 - Non-immigrant Students and Visitor Programs.

KASD Students Enjoyed a Fitness Filled September
It was a September filled with exercise, fresh air, and excitement for KASD students. From fun runs to celebrating National Walk to School Day, our students have been actively engaged in various enriching activities.
Mapleview Intermediate School had an impressive turnout of 100 students for National Walk to School Day! But they weren't alone— the 4K Center for Literacy, Janssen, Sunrise, Westside, Woodland Elementary and Woodland Intermediate also joined. There was a great turnout, with many students, family members, and staff attending the events.
Our Parent Teacher Organizations have been hard at work organizing fun runs across the District. These events are more than just fundraisers; they celebrate our students' enthusiasm and commitment. Proceeds from the runs will help fund a variety of areas, including playground improvements, musical instruments, books, elementary and intermediate activities, staff appreciation gifts, etc. Whether they ran, walked, or skipped, each lap completed was a victory lap in our eyes.
