October Newsletter

What a great start to the school year. It truly flew by. What sticks out to me most is the care that our students/staff/community have for one another. I saw so many acts of kindness in the month of October that made me proud to be a Lion. Iowa School Performance Profiles came out and Lisbon Elementary scored in the top 2% in the state. What a great validation for our students/staff/families for all of the hard work that has been put in thus far. We know that this honor will be a difficult mark to achieve year after year but we are motivated to continue to grow as a group to ensure that our students are served in the best way possible. Here's to a great November!

Preschool got to enjoy the day at Bass Farms! They had a blast!

Kindergarteners finished a week of Fire Safety learning at the fire station with the LFD. They loved seeing first hand how a firefighter gets dressed and the equipment they use. They even snagged a ride back in/on the fire truck!

Kindergarteners learned about the letter Aa from Alf, the adventure loving Superkid, who needs an anteater as a pet due to the ants constantly ruining his fun. For Alf center day the kids played “Roll a s’more” game, played with animals in the pond sensory tub, wrote about adventures, listened to seasonal books and created camping pictures with math manipulatives. They also went fishing and made shadow puppets while camping, all while playing in the "dark" and listening to night forest sounds.

In conclusion of Fire Safety Week, first graders visited the Lisbon Fire Station. They got to see important equipment firefighters use, took a look inside of the emergency vehicles, and reviewed fire safety. The ride back to school in the fire engines was definitely a highlight of our field trip. We are SO thankful to our Lisbon volunteer firefighters for their gifts of talent and time as they work to educate the youth in our community on fire safety!

Fourth Grade got to enjoy some activities on the track.

The 6th graders have been working hard this month! In math, they finished the unit on fractions and now they are learning about rational numbers, absolute value and ordering rational numbers and absolute values from least to greatest. They've done a really great job with this!

In science, students sampled foods made with bacteria or made from fungi while learning about their role in our lives, in the environment, and how their cell structures compare to our own.

In Social Studies, all 6th graders wrapped up a fun project where students learned about a mixed economy and they created a product that they would like to sell. They drew a blueprint of their proposed product along with a description of how their product works. They broke down costs for materials they would need to make it and considered how much they would sell it for to make a profit. We discussed the resources they would need to build their product and identified the intended group who they thought would purchase and benefit from their project. They came up with very interesting ideas and their creativity was very impressive!

It’s been a fun month in 6th grade as we’ve celebrated the Fall and Halloween season with our first big writing project as the students have been working on their scary stories since the beginning of the month. There’s been some inspiration along the way with some Halloween inspired music and movies.

In Reading class we’ve just started some historical fiction readings and have continued on reading The Cay which is set during World War II and fits perfectly with our Wonders’ unit.
