Great Big Recess!
Message from Ms. Bye
I wanted to share some exciting changes that will be happening in the art program this year. I am transitioning from a more teacher-directed curriculum to a learner-directed, choice-based art curriculum. A choice-based art program means students in art will be introduced to and allowed to choose from a variety of centers like drawing, collage, painting, sculpture, fiber, printmaking, digital art, and clay. The goal is to offer a program where students are encouraged to assume creative control of their art and art-making processes within an environment designed to support individual inquiry and the development of artistic behavior. In a choice-based classroom, it is the individual student, not the teacher who defines the project. Teachers instead function as facilitators, mentors, instructors, and motivators depending on the observed needs, circumstances, and interests of the students.

Picture Retake Day - October 17th
We will have a picture retake day on October 17th. Any family wishing to have school pictures taken for their child will be able to have them taken during the school day on the 17th. Online ordering will be available in future newsletters. If any parents would like to help with this day, we could use a couple parents to help gather students who need their picture taken in the morning.

If you haven't used Safe Arrival to report an absence for your child, please see the directions for how to download the app and log into your account: https://sdw.waukesha.k12.wi.us/page/safe-arrival-attendance-reporting

We have two ways to donate to your child’s fun run. Students can gather donations and log them on a paper pledge form and/or donations can be submitted online.
Option 1: The paper pledge forms and checks made out to Hillcrest PTO must be turned in a week prior to the fun run event (due by end of school day on Friday, October 6th). This gives us time to enter the information into the system on your behalf. We will not accept paper pledge donations after Friday, October 6th.
Option 2: Donations made directly online can be submitted until noon on October 13th using the online platform 99Pledges: https://app.99pledges.com/fund/hillcrestfunrun2023. Here are the steps to use 99Pledges for online donations.
We are raising money this year to go towards a new playground piece of equipment, our end of year Day of Awesomeness, as well as free family events and classroom needs throughout the year. Students can earn cool prizes!
