SME newsletter for families and the community
Dear Parents,
As you can see on the calendar below, we have a few very busy weeks at SME.
October 16 - 20 will be COGAT/ITBS testing for second graders.
The Cognitive Abilities Test (CogAT) is a multiple-choice assessment that measures reasoning skills with different types of verbal, quantitative, and nonverbal questions. The CogAT is a group-administered aptitude test commonly given as an entrance exam into school’s gifted programs. The Iowa Tests are achievement tests published by the University of Iowa. The two most commonly-given Iowa Tests are the Iowa Tests of Basic Skills (ITBS) and the Iowa Assessments. Both are achievement tests, meaning they assess a child’s knowledge of what they have learned in school and are not cognitive or IQ tests.
Also, this week we will begin voting on our favorite Storybook Pumpkins. These are in the library and students can "vote" with coins/bills for their favorite pumpkin.
ALL PRO DADS starts this week. Our first meeting is on Thursday at 6:45. It will end at 7:30. Dads bring their students for a before-school breakfast with a faith-based lesson. All Pro Dads is usually heavily attended, which is great. However, our parking this year is limited. We encourage you to park in the side lot by the cafeteria, in the grass, or along the road. Please do not park in the back or in the front, as that is where teachers and staff park. Please visit https://www.allprodad.com/ to learn more about All Pro Dads.
Warm regards,
Melissa Terry
Best of the Nest
Each month at Six Mile Elementary, we focus on different character traits and talk about ways to show those traits to others. We discuss the trait in morning meeting in our classrooms. We spotlight the trait on the school news show. Mrs. Orr, our guidance counselor, goes into classrooms and does special lessons with the trait. At the end of each month, we have a Best of the Nest party to honor those students who "shine" in that area.
This month, our word is Integrity. Integrity is choosing to be truthful in all you say and do.
National School Bus Safety Week
The National School Bus Safety Week, administered by the National Association of Pupil Transportation, is approaching. Starting Monday, school transportation departments around the country will be celebrating drivers and school buses alike.
This year’s theme is “Safely Rolling to my Destination” with the goal of promoting safety on school buses and addressing the importance of bus drivers. National School Bus Safety Week is an active and evolving public education program, held during the third full week of October each year, designed to promote school bus safety and a way for parents, students, school administrators, etc. to highlight the importance of safety on board the bus.
Please talk to your students about ways to stay safe waiting for the bus, riding the bus, and exiting the bus. Encourage your students to thank their drivers for keeping them safe daily on their way to and from school.
Absence Notes
If your student is absent, you have three days to send a note stating the reason for their absence before it is counted unexcused. You can send a handwritten note or you can email Stephanie Merck at stephaniemerck@pickens.k12.sc.us. You can also email your child's teacher.
When students have accumulated 3 absences in a row without a note, Mrs. Plyler will have to schedule a meeting for an Attendance Conference. Please make sure to get your note in so that this does not happen.
