BATES' BITS
March 4, 2013
I can't tell you how much fun I had dressing up as one of Dr. Seuss' quirky characters and sharing my favorite book, "Ten Apples Up on Top," with my students. Dr. Seuss books have that magical effect that appeal to everyone, young and old. A big thank you to our adopter, TLC, for sponsoring the day.
This week all students will be taking their nine week test. It is important students get plenty of sleep the night before and eat a good breakfast the morning of the test. Some other tips that are helpful when preparing for a math test are:
- Look over all notes.
- Rework the homework problems.
- Make flashcards.
- Study in a quiet place.
- Do not wait until the night before to begin studying. Review every night.
Please make sure your students study and are prepared for these tests.
International Pi Day is coming soon. The Pi projects have started coming in and they are awesome!!!! Students are doing an incredible job making them unique and their own. Don't forget they are due this Thursday, 3/7. I can't wait to see them all!!!
The faculty and staff have generously offered to donate pies for the students to enjoy on 3/14. I am still a few pies short and want to make sure that I have plenty for everybody so if anyone would like to send in a pie, please send me an email.

This Week in Math History
William Oughtred was born March 5, 1574. He was an English mathematician who not only invented an early version of the slide ruler but also introduced many mathematic symbols, such as X for multiplication, that are still used today. Click http://www-history.mcs.st-and.ac.uk/Biographies/Oughtred.html to learn more about Oughtred.
Next week, on 3/14/2013, we will celebrate Pi Day. There is a very famous mathematician who was born on 3/14. Can anyone tell me who this well-known person is, what year he was born and what he contributed to the field of mathematics?
