NEGATIVE LUNCH BALANCES
As a district we are making some changes to how we handle negative lunch balances. The schools will make attempts to receive money owed. If that is unsuccessful the balances get transferred to central office where they will handle negative balances over $20. It is important to make sure your child's lunch account has a positive balance. Any student without money in their account or cash in hand are not allowed to charge a-la-carte items, this includes milk & water. You can always check your children's lunch balances on the www.myschoolbucks.com website. What happens if a child doesn’t have a lunch or forgets it at home? In that case, students will be allowed to charge a full meal which includes an entrée, fruit, vegetable and beverage, and bring in the money the next day. Thank you.

Hope Valley School Vocabulary Initiative
Vocabulary is a significant predictor of reading comprehension. “Indeed, one of the most enduring findings in reading research is the extent to which students’ vocabulary knowledge relates to their reading comprehension.” (Osborn & Hieber, 2004)
How many words do children know? Children need to learn 2,000 to 3,000 new words each year from 3rd grade onward, about 6-8 per day. In 1st and 2nd grade, children need to learn 800+ words per year, about 2 per day (Biemiller; Nagy & Anderson)
We will continue with our Monthly calendars to be used across all grade levels throughout the school. Each month will have a “theme” and all vocabulary words will be related to that theme.
Each month a new calendar will be sent home. Hang it on your refrigerator or keep it somewhere that it can be seen each day. Challenge your whole family to become “Word Wizards” by using these words in their own vocabulary. Look for these words in books or listen for them on the television or radio. Encourage your child to share these valuable experiences with their teacher(s).
