Last week saw some great achievements from some of our students. Our Stage 3 Debating Team won their debate against Matraville Public School, and Aden Christensen was awarded third place in the Pauline McLeod Art Competition. Congratulations to these students!
This week we have students competing in the Multicultural Public Speaking Finals on Monday, and the Regional Cross Country Carnival on Friday. We wish these students the best of luck as they progress to the next level in these events. Let's hope the rain dries up before Friday's carnival!
Our SMS system has been set up and you should have received a couple of reminder messages over the past couple of weeks. We are currently ironing out a few small problems with the system and hope to be able to use the system effectively in the coming days. In the meantime, please don't forget to check our Twitter feed (@BanksmeadowPS) so as not to miss out on important reminders and notices.
Don't forget the important events this week:
* Onesie Day on Thursday. Bring a gold coin donation.
A Cartoon Artist Visits Art Club!
This week, ART Club students took part in a cartooning workshop run by author and artist, Robert Patruno. Students learned how to use their imagination and everyday objects as inspiration to create comical cartoons with humorous expressions. From Bart Simpson to talking pencils, the opportunities for cartooning are endless! Thank you Robert! See below for some photos.
Pauline McLeod Art Competition
Reconciliation Week was held last week, 27 May - 3 June 2016. This year's theme is ‘Our History, Our Story, Our Future’. Year 3/4 presented an assembly earlier this term to commemorate Reconciliation Week and National Sorry Day. Students also took part in lessons and activities to learn more about these significant dates.
Aden Christensen from 3/4F entered an artwork in the Pauline Mcleod Reconciliation Week Primary School Art Competition. His painting represented symbols and landmarks from our history and our future, with the Aboriginal flag looking over these things. Last week Aden attended an awards ceremony and was presented with third place. Congratulations Aden!
Onesie Day
Stage 1 students have been learning about endangered animals. They would like to hold a ONESIE Day to raise money to donate to the World Wildlife Fund (WWF). The Onesie Day will be held on Thursday 9th June. Students may wear their onesie to school, or if they don't have one, a pair of pyjamas could be a good alternative. The fee for wearing mufti on this day is a gold coin donation. Stage 1 students will collect these donations from each classroom in the morning session.
Debating Winners
Congratulations to our amazing school debating team. The team, consisting of Hayden, Caprice, Erin and Larna, competed against Matraville PS and managed to convince the audience and adjudicator that only Australian products should be sold in Australian supermarkets. No easy feat! Our debating team has been a solid contender in the group stages of the tournament and we wish them the best of luck as they move on to the next level.
School Gates - REPEAT
To ensure the safety of all Banksmeadow PS students, the driveway and pedestrian gates at the Wiggins/Trevelyan Streets entrance will be locked between the hours of 9am and 3pm. If you need to enter the school between these times, please enter from Brighton St - this gate will be unlocked. Please ensure that you close all gates behind you when entering or leaving the school.
If your child arrives late to school, please accompany them to the office and fill out a 'Notice of Late Arrival' form.
Cybersafety Information Session - REPEAT
The majority of students now own an iPad, iPod or internet enabled device. Many students use the internet regularly, with some accessing social media sites. It is extremely important that we take measures to ensure the safety of our children when online. The Youth Liaison Officer from Mascot Police will be visiting the school on Wednesday 22nd June to deliver an information session on Cybersafety. She will inform parents of some of the dangers that children may be exposed to when using the internet, and will provide some tips and strategies for parents to implement to keep children safe. This session will be held at 6pm in the Library. It will be relevant for parents with children of all ages.
Student Absences - REPEAT
All student absences from school must be explained by providing a note to the class teacher on the student's first day back at school. The school is required to mark all unexplained absences on class rolls. These rolls are subject to inspection by the Home School Liaison Officer (HSLO) throughout the year. The HSLO investigates patterns of absences or high numbers of unexplained absences, and follows these up with families. Please ensure you explain all absences to the class teacher.
It is appreciated if, where possible, appointments are made outside of school hours to ensure that your child does not miss out on vital learning. Please be aware that partial absences for students who leave early or arrive late due to commitments such as swimming lessons will be marked on the roll as an unacceptable reason for leave. Please book these lessons outside of school hours.
Lost Property - REPEAT
The Lost Property tub in the school office is quickly filling up. If your child has lost any items of clothing please check the tub. We also have some students who have lost items of clothing but can not locate them in Lost Property. It would be appreciated if you could please check any jumpers and hats that you may have at home to ensure your child has not accidentally picked up someone else's.
