Rio Hondo Bobcat "Super" News

On Tuesday, April 25, 2023, Sarah Benavides, Milla Bocanegra, Brandon Gonzalez, Emma Pezeshki, Serena Quinones, Eleazar Vasquez, and Karina Zuniga were invited along with their families to attend and RHISD officials to be honored for earning their Associate of Arts in General Studies from Texas Southmost College. The proclamation stated the following in part:

"WHEREAS, seniors at Rio Hondo High School have shown resilience, flexibility, and adaptability as they have worked diligently to meet the requirements of graduation and receive a Certificate Associate of Art in General Studies despite the challenges of the school year, and.....WHEREAS, this experience has and will continue to shape their futures. .... on behalf of the residents of Rio Hondo, we offer heartfelt congratulations and best wishes on this important milestone in your lives. We couldn't be more proud of you!"

On Tuesday, April 25, 2023, Mayor Olivarez read a proclamation honoring Christian Matthew Rodriguez for exceeding the standards with hard work and dedication in scholastics as well as his competitiveness and enthusiasm to excel in the Spelling Bee. Christian won 1st place in the District Spelling Bee and placed 15th amongst forty-six students at the Rio Grande Valley Regional Spelling Bee held in at the Edinburg Conference Center on March 4th, 2023. The proclamation read in part:

"NOW, THEREFORE, I, Gustavo Olivares, Mayor of the City of Rio Hondo, Texas, by the authority vested in me, do hereby, on behalf of the citizens of Rio Hondo, Texas extend Congratulations and Best Wishes to you; and we the City Commission are so proud of you to have represented our City.

Texas Noble Builders has partnered with Rio Hondo ISD as a P-TECH Business Partner for the past four years. President/CEO, Rene Capistran, blessed our entire RHISD staff with all of the meat and began bar-b-queing for our luncheon since 5:00 am on March 31st, 2023, which was a designated staff development day. RHISD administration enlisted the catering services of our very own food service department to prepare all of the sides for the occasion honoring our Bobcat team! It was an EXCELLENT day to celebrate and honor an EXCELLENT Bobcat Team! Many thanks for all who participated in the planning and organizing of this event! It was delicious!!!

RHISD students will be riding in comfort and safety in these brand new buses which just joined our fleet in April! With these two new buses, we can now provide ALL students with air-conditioned/heated bus rides to and from school which is the first time we have been able to reach this milestone in our history as a district. Mr. Felix Flores has been assigned to Bus #3, and Mr. Oscar Flores has been assigned to Bus #4. The gentlemen are excited to drive these nice, new, shiny buses around town. RHISD is on the move!!!

For the first time in RHISD's history, the District contracted with professional auctioneers to conduct a district auction. That decision surely paid off with the district bringing in $62,000 in sales. (the last auction brought in a mere $3,950)

Many thanks goes to our Maintenance Staff for all the work and coordination that went into making this auction a great success!!!

The new funds gained from the auction are being put to good use with the purchase of two much needed maintenance trucks for our District Maintenance department. Seen above is Mr. Angel Carrizales, Maintenance Supervisor, standing next to his "new to us" quad cab maintenance truck. Thanks to Mr. Frank Hernandez for finding this 2011 Chevrolet 2500 with only 59,000 miles on it! It was a honey of a deal!

• Two new score boards for our baseball and softball fields are on their way to RHISD!!!
• RHHS P-TECH is undergoing an exterior door upgrade to ensure the safety and security of our students and staff.
• Plans are underway to upgrade the security and safety of all three campuses with a new security guard for each campus who will raptor and check in each campus visitor prior to entering the front door of the campus.
• RHES was recently awarded a $125,000 Elon Musk Grant to buy new playground equipment which will be installed this summer!
