Classroom News
Kindergarten: Hello Kindergarten Family, We had a great week. Kindergartners have started to go to breakfast on their own when they arrive at school. Please continue to help them learn their lunch numbers. It makes the transition through the lunch line so much easier for them. Next we will be learning about Families and Fall. Stories about Families and Fall as it relates to Characters. We will be doing a Family Tree project that will come home this Friday and it is due back Tuesday, information will be in your child’s folder. We will also be learning the letters Qq,Rr,Ss,Tt,Uu, color-orange. In Math we will Count, Show and Write Numbers to 5. Thank you for all you do the help our students at WPS.
First Grade: Hello from First Grade! Our story of the week next week will be My Rotten Redheaded Older Brother by Patricia Polacco. We will focus on characters, setting, beginning, middle, and end. In math, we’ll be using addition to subtract. Please be sure your child is reading their take-home books nightly, as well as studying sight words. Homework is sent home on Mondays and due back on Fridays.
Second Grade: Greetings from Second Grade! Next week we will begin to analyze how characters respond to major events in stories. We will also be looking closely at character traits. In math we will be applying what we have learned, about adding and subtracting within 20, to solve one-step word problems. Next week begins our Science unit for Matter. Students will be learning about the states of matter. Please continue to read for 20 minutes each night and complete the homework assignment.
High Frequency Words to Study: name, good, sentence, man, think, say
Resource:
Art: Our awesome little artists have been participating in a “poster” contest held by the North Carolina School Board Association. The topic our students have been given is “What makes a good friend”. We have discussed as a group what qualities make a good friend, or qualities they see in the friendships that they already have. Students have creatively expressed on paper what friendship means to them. There will be one student chosen (we are only allowed to submit one entry) to submit their artwork for the contest.
Music: Students from Miss Bowen, Mrs. Reason, and Mrs. Toler’s classes will demonstrate some of the multicultural songs and drumming we have learned this month in music. Students will begin reading rhythm notes while playing instruments this week. Work songs, songs about friendship, and patriotic songs are always part of the fall semester in the music room!
Library: 1st and 2nd graders have started book checkout. They will be able to take 1 book home this week. I recommend keeping them in book bags whenever they are not being used, so they won’t get lost, and they will always be with them. On their library days, they will bring their books back to swap and check out a new one. This week we read “We’re Going on a Book Hunt” and talked about good ways to look for books, keep the library organized, and how to take care of their books. As they show responsibility, keeping their books nice, and bringing them back they will get to check out more than one at a time (depending on what grade they are in). Keep on reading!
Tiger Reminders
1. Please be reminded that during afternoon pickup parents should remain in their vehicles and your child will be brought to your vehicle by a staff member. At no time should parents walk up to the building during dismissal to get their child. This is to ensure the safety of all students.
2. Student Early Check-out time ends at 2:15pm. After 2:15 students will be released during dismissal.
3. Parents it is imperative that all of our scholars arrive to school on time each day. Instruction begins daily at 7:55 and when students are late multiple times a week they are missing vital instructional time. Please make sure that your child arrives to school no later than 7:45.Thank you with your help in this matter as we work together o ensure the academic success of all students.
4. Parents it is crucial that you make sure that your child is at school each and everyday. Each day that your child is out of school they are missing important instruction, which can have a negative impact on their academic success. We want to make sure that all of our Tiger Scholars are successful..
Student Services
Students this week have started Second Step. Second Step is a program that works with students on social and emotional lessons. Also, Kindergarten students have their classwork hanging outside of Student Services from the first week. The lesson was on “I Can Listen.”

ATTENTION PARENTS:
Please help your children, other students, and staff at WPS stay healthy through the school year by helping us educate them about proper handwashing. Hand hygiene is important to help prevent the spread of germs and bacteria that makes everyone sick. Educate your children on the importance of using hand sanitizer and hand washing throughout the day!!
