Adult Years Vocational Program features Student Enterprise and Upcycling
Each teacher of the AYVP is responsible for a specific component of the Student Enterprise. Ms. Ana Brown oversees the AYVP's Student Enterprise Store which is housed in the Annex of the Bowie Learning Center. Students in Ms. Brown's class work on the production of items that they sell throughout the school year. Because each item is individually created, they reflect the personality of the students as the items proceed through the production process.
Ms. Monica Villarreal leads her students in AYVP's newest component, Upcycling. When asked what "upcycling" was in his own words, Edison graduate Xavier Esquivel stated, "It's turning something old into something new." He went on to explain how recycled water bottles are melted down to make new plastic. In addition to used water bottles, students in Ms. Villarreal's class are accepting donations of items such as art and scrapbook supplies, fabric, containers, and art supplies at can be cleaned and sold. Items that can not be accepted include clothing, furniture, technology, food items, or hazardous materials.
Ms. Geralyn Martinez's class has begun to grow produce in their Salsa Garden that they hope to make and sell later in the school year.
In addition to learning how to produce unique products for sale, AYVP students in all three classes are learning workplace social skills, money and inventory management, developing business plans, and advocating for their future job interests.
AYVP Store hours are Tuesdays and Thursdays from 9am to 10:30am. Please contact Ms. Brown at 210.354.9362 to schedule a visit to the store outside of school hours or to discuss custom orders. Ms. Villarreal and Ms. Martinez can also be reached at the this number. Feel free to contact them with any questions about a possible upcycling donation or progress on our Salsa Garden.
