A message from Food Service Director Jan Sliper
Farm to School is a national movement aimed to connect communities with local, fresh, healthy foods served in schools. North Dakota Farm to School week is celebrated Sept 14-20. West Fargo Public Schools is now purchasing a portion of its food locally as part of a Farm to School program. Our school district has started a new partnership with Fresh Connect Food Hub in Fergus Falls, MN. We are purchasing fresh, local fruits and vegetables grown right here in our area. Farmers and producers from the region are growing items specifically for schools and other institutions who are purchasing from Fresh Connect. Our school district is excited to be involved by supporting area farmers and bringing the farm to you! Locally grown means fresher, tastier, and more nutritious foods for our students. Food Service Director Jan Sliper notices the difference of local foods. “The quality and freshness of the fruits and vegetables is outstanding. When students are served fruits and vegetables that taste good, we know they will consume more”, said Sliper. We are committed to supporting the development of healthy eating habits for our students by offering a variety of delicious fruits and vegetables on our menus. Your school’s salad bar features a nice variety of fresh produce. The cucumbers, peppers and tomatoes are from local growers. Give them a try!

Celebrate with Healthy Snacks
Independence Elementary will be following a healthy snacks policy during the day and will not allow snacks or birthday treats that are high in sugar and fat. We would appreciate your help with this as students start to bring snacks or birthday treats to school. Please contact the office or your child's teacher for a list of acceptable treats. Thank you for your support!
