Full Circle
“There are three stages of man: he believes in Santa Claus; he does not believe in Santa Claus; he is Santa Claus.” –Bob Phillips
This quote makes me smile because it highlights the cyclic patterns that happen throughout our lives. There are so many times that we go from being enamored with something, repelled by that thing, and, finally, the catalyst for making that thing real for others.
In a school year we see the same pattern emerge. When we think of behavior, people tend to go from "I know the behavior can change" to "We've tried it all and it will never get better". Finally, we reach the point of "The behavior changed because I did the work and became the change".
As we enter the second semester, we are coming out of the "disillusionment" stage and working our way to "rejuvenation". If you are finding it hard to make that transition and feel stuck, reach out to a trusted friend, colleague, or your Student Support Services coach. Some students go from "I love school and I love my teacher!" to being disenchanted and eventually come out as wanting to be the teacher. The energy and excitement that builds with helping others be successful is the reason most people choose a career in education.
A note from Student Support Services
Mystery Student or Mystery Behavior
To use this strategy, tell students you have chosen a "Mystery Student" and if that student meets expectations all class period they will earn the reward. You have the power to pre-determine this student or, without telling your students, to see who does the best and reward that person. The power behind this is that since no one knows who it is, all students will focus on meeting expectations to hopefully earn the reward. You can also decide what the criteria will be. It could be meeting all CHAMPS expectations or something as simple as transitioning appropriately. If you pre-determine a student, celebrate them publicly if they meet the expectations. If they do not meet the goal, tell the students "Our mystery students didn't earn the prize today. We'll try again tomorrow! Remember, to meet the expectations you should..." but do not call the student out publicly.
The "Mystery Behavior" works the same way but will work for the whole class. You let the students know that you have chosen a mystery behavior and if the class meets the expectations for that behavior, they will earn the reward. This can be done for transitions, following attention signal, keeping area clean, etc.
