RSU #4 Community Newsletter
February 16, 2024
This week we celebrated the 100th day of school!
As we approach the February school vacation, we want to take a moment to express our gratitude for your ongoing support and partnership in your child's education journey. Together, we've reached the halfway mark of the academic year, and it's truly inspiring to witness the growth and progress our students have made so far.
Our school community strives to create a nurturing environment where every child can flourish academically, socially, and emotionally. We are proud of the positive impact we've had on your child's development and are excited for the opportunities that lie ahead.
As we prepare to welcome students back after the vacation, we remain committed to providing a safe, supportive, and engaging learning environment for every child. We look forward to continuing our partnership with you in supporting your child's growth and success.
Thank you for entrusting us with your child's education. Wishing you a wonderful February vacation!
New Flag at Central Office
Thank you to Senator Collins for providing a new flag that was flown over the Capitol, especially for RSU 4 School District, after the destruction of the old flag during December storms, with assistance from RSU 4 parent Karen Staples, who is also a staff member in Senator Collins' Lewiston Office. As a side note, Katy Grondin was Karen's second grade teacher!
Bus Safety
Dustin Miles and Jason Coan demonstrate how NOT to behave on the bus during a Carrie Ricker assembly. Cherie Poole taught them the expectations and they were able to behave beautifully after.
Sledding Exercise
OHHS students having fun sledding during PE class, quite the workout climbing back up the hill!
Portland Stage Company
Libby Tozier students and staff were highly engaged during the Readers' Theater performances as books come alive with character voices.
Learning Through Technology
Literacy Night

Transportation Update
The District has 10 full-time Bus Drivers with 8 Drivers on the road currently. The District is still poised to hire a driver in training in an effort to un-consolidate runs and ultimately get students home sooner.
Our newest driver, Matt, has been hired and will start on February 26. He will cover drivers’ runs if they are unable to drive as well as other transportation needs. Matt will work closely with all of our drivers in the coming weeks to learn their runs.
The Green bus is still being covered by Dan and will continue to be until Cliff returns. Upon Cliff’s return, a decision will be made as to the reassignment of Dan based on the highest need.
One candidate is currently working with our drivers to complete their Behind-The-Wheel training before taking their driving test. Training will continue over February break.
Training costs to the candidates will be reimbursed.
RSU 4 drivers are being paid to train those in training.
One RSU #4 teacher completed the first part of bus driver training towards attaining their bus driver license in order to drive a bus for their program field trips and after school trips. They are currently waiting for a written test date from the state.
Two SAD 75 drivers continue to drive Pre-K runs. An RSU #4 Coach drives the Lewiston Regional Technical Center run part-time.
One MSAD 11 driver will be periodically available to do trips in the evening and weekends.
Having a substitute driver pool is a goal for supporting driver absences. We have seen an increase in prospective drivers with CDL licenses who need endorsements interested in driving for us in a substitute/trip capacity.
Staffing agencies, social media, posters, signs and job posting options have continued to be utilized to attract new applicants for positions.
Addressing the transportation needs is a top priority in the district’s daily operations.
Thank you to all our families for stepping in to provide transportation when needed! We appreciate your support and understanding. If you have any questions, suggestions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact the Director of Operations (Maintenance, Facilities, Transportation and Emergency Management), Jonathan Varney, jonathan.varney@rsu4.org.
Thank You to School Counselors!
The week of February 5-9th was National School Counselor Week! School counselors play a vital role in supporting students as they explore their abilities, strengths, interests, and talents. Their work is emphasized on promoting positive strategies to improve students' academic, career, and social/emotional growth. A BIG THANK YOU to RSU 4's School Counselors, Tony Green, Jen Waterman, Erin Cloutier and Mel Gagnon!
