We Are... Wildcats!!
May 5th, 2023
May 8-12 is Staff Appreciation Week!
Help us celebrate all of our incredible Weiss staff. Each person has been instrumental in the growth and development of our students and we want to express our appreciation for their year of hard work and dedication to our Wildcat community.
Staff Appreciation Week is made possible through a collaborative effort with families, the PTO, administration and Food Services within the district.
The PTO needs your help to provide staff with meals for the week, small treats, and a lounge stocked with snacks and food that they can grab and go during their busy lunch breaks.
If you are able to donate cash, snacks and/or your time this week, please use this link: https://tinyurl.com/4zczeff7
- If you click, “view full description” at the top of the sign up genius link, it should give more information on how to donate to the Amazon Wish List and the Pay Pal link.
Thank you,
Weiss PTO

Class Environment Survey for the 2023-2024 School Year
Dear Weiss Families,
At this time each year, staff members begin to look forward to the next year by discussing class placements for students. It may seem early; however, many factors are considered before making classroom placement recommendations. It is a big task that requires much time and thought.
To ensure balanced class lists and successful school experiences for all students, factors such as gender, academic performance, student strengths and weaknesses, and peer relations are well thought out. Even teacher traits are considered in the process to attempt to match students and teachers.
Parents sometimes have teacher preferences; however, we cannot place children in classes only on the basis of the parents’ preference. You are welcome to complete our CLASSROOM ENVIRONMENT REQUEST SURVEY AT THIS LINK, for your child for next school year. Your input is valued and will be taken into consideration. This environment survey will remain open through Wednesday, May 10th, 2023.
Downriver STEM at Weiss Elementary is filled with talented and hardworking teachers that are dedicated to the success of each and every child that enters our doors.

PBIS Club Day
Weiss did something new this month for PBIS. We did clubs! The whole school had PBIS clubs this afternoon at the same time. Students got to choose which one they wanted to attend. Some of the club choices today were: Star Wars Club, Cooking Club, Art Club, Science Club, Disney Club, Lego Club, Board Games, Dance Party, Play-Doh, Basketball, Sewing, Coloring Club, Reader’s Theater Club, PE and Me Club, and Kindness Club. The students had a great time!

Culture Day- May 19th
Hello Wildcat Families,
We are thrilled to announce that our 4th-grade Orange Squad students are organizing a fantastic event for our school community - Culture Day! The event was inspired by Batoul E., one of our talented 4th graders at Weiss.
Our Orange Squad students have worked hard to create a special opportunity for interested families and students to share their culture or a culture they want to teach about with the school community. On May 19th in the PM (around 1:30pm-3:30pm), interested students in presenting will have their stations set up to showcase different cultures around the world, and other students in the school will have the chance to learn from them.
We are proud of our Orange Squad students for taking the lead on this exciting initiative and creating an opportunity for us all to learn from each other. Great job, Batoul, and our whole Orange Squad! We can't wait to see all the amazing presentations and artifacts on display.
Additionally, we're excited to share a blurb and an attachment created by two talented Orange Squad members to provide all the details about this exciting initiative. The blurb is the one directly below this message:
Girls Engineering Exploration SWE-Detroit
Dear Parents & Educators,
The Society of Women Engineers (SWE) Detroit Section is pleased to announce our 15th annual Girls’ Engineering Exploration (GEE) Day on Saturday, June 3, 2023. This year’s open house style event will be held at Keast Commons on Wayne State University's campus from 10AM - 2PM. The free event, with lunch provided, is a part of SWE’s continuous effort to educate girls about the endless career opportunities that the engineering field has to offer.
Registration instructions are included on the flyer and linked here. We will take sign ups through 6/2/23--registrations after 5/19/23 are not guaranteed lunch or a t-shirt.
GEE is open to 4th, 5th, 6th, 7th & 8th grade girls. Students will be able to do hands-on activities, learn what engineers do, how they use STEM in their jobs, and interact with women in engineering.
The event will be held outdoors in an open house style. As such, we are requiring that students be accompanied by a parent/guardian at all times. There will be resources for parents at each activity station.
For any questions, please contact us as SWEDetroitGEE@gmail.com.
Sincerely,
SWE Detroit GEE Committee
