Cross-listing: Available In Canvas
Similar to course merge in itslearning, cross-listing allows you to move section enrollments from individual courses and combine them into one course. This feature is helpful for instructors who teach several sections of the same course and only want to manage course data in one location. Follow the steps in the video created by C. Milton Wright High School Teacher Jennifer Gusso or this Canvas-created video. De-cross-listing is complex, so only cross-list when you are certain that you want your courses merged.
- Different from itslearning, crosslisting is more of a parent-child relationship. Child sections are cross-listed to a parent section which hosts all of the content and grades of the course. E.g., if you are teaching sections 0001 and 0002 and you want the overall course to be hosted in the 0001 site, then you will be cross-listing the 0002 child course into the parent 0001 course site.
- You should only cross-list BEFORE students do any work. Otherwise, cross-listed students will lose access to their assignment submissions and grades since these are stored in their original course site. We suggest doing this at the beginning of the semester prior to publishing your course to students.
- Merge courses before adding content. When the merge is complete, you will no longer have access to the original course spaces. If you have content in the child course, copy it into your sandbox before cross-listing.
*** Office hours specific to supporting teachers in cross-listing are available from 12:00 to 3:00 p.m. TODAY, Friday, September 2, 2022. Click here to join the meeting.***
Contact Canvas support if de-crosslisting is necessary. Do not select the “x” under sections as that will delete the section.
