Dawson Diary
What's happening at Dawson this week beginning 04/05/2020
A Note from Mrs. Jedele
Dear Dawson Community,
This has been such a unique time for teaching and learning. I know that everyone's situation is a little different, and we all have different resources at our disposal. Some families have lots of time to dedicate to online learning, and others do not have as much time. Some families have access to online learning opportunities, and others do not. Some families have parents and family members who continue to work outside the home, and others have adults with them at home all the time. Some families have adults who work from home, making it a challenge to balance work and home life. Again, every situation is a little bit different.Because we are working hard to ensure that the learning opportunities we provide are equitable for everyone within our community, we will continue to take this week to prepare. Teachers are continuing to work hard preparing for virtual lessons. This week, you will find out when each teacher has "Office Hours," the time when your child's teacher is available to support your child with their learning. Teachers will also make sure you know how you and your child will be receiving the virtual lessons each week. Please make sure you are in contact with your child's teacher.
The AISD Learning At-Home website will continue to be the foundation of learning for our students across the district. If you are unable to access the resources on this site, please make sure that you have contacted your child's teacher, or the front office at school, so we can assist you. While we are not in the school building, we check our voicemail and email daily.
Please also remember that physical student learning packets are distributed each Wednesday at Dawson during the curbside meal service from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. We are working with the district to develop other times the learning packets might be available. You can also find the digital version of the learning packets online on each grade level page.
Teachers will supplement the district site with lessons in each subject area. Lessons will begin with review, and as we move forward, lessons will begin to have new content.
The district is currently working on providing a device to all 3rd through 5th grade students who do not have one for their use. If you have a child in 3rd-5th grades, you should be receiving communication from the district technology department. If you have not yet received communication from them, please check your contact information in the parent portal to ensure that your information is up to date.
This is definitely a new and exciting time, but it is also a stressful one. Please take the time to check out the Counselor's Corner section of this newsletter to help support you and your family.
What questions and concerns do you have? As always, I look forward to hearing from you; please do not hesitate to reach out.
Your Proud Principal,
Mrs. Jedele

We hope you and your families are all staying healthy and happy. We hope you are using this time together to be grateful for each other and have fun and be kind and practice mindfulness and deep breathing and self-care.
Please remember the problem-solving skills that we have learned together to help remain calm while spending these long stretches of time at home together.
For Kids: Being out of our normal routine of going to school and seeing friends and teachers can feel strange and unsettling. If you are feeling worried, and seeking a more grounded, calm feeling, which is more healthy for our brains and bodies, remember to take a little time throughout each day to practice some mindfulness. One idea could be participating in some mindful movement. Look below for the poster from our office we’ve used together this year.
For Parents: Conscious Discipline is a wonderful, research-proven program that is used by educators, families, and mental health providers. This link is specifically about managing family conversations around COVID-19, and has other links to helpful printable resources such as feelings charts and social stories.
