Mr. Jose Niño
There have been a couple of different write-ups in previous editions of the Panther Prowl that have been dedicated to Mr. Jose Niño, the now retired Corona High School teacher and tennis coach. He's been a teacher at CHS since 1970 until his official retirement earlier this summer. In October 23rd's LA Times, there was a feature article on Mr. Niño that can be found by clicking on the link below. We will be honoring Mr. Niño later towards the end of the school year. More details will be released as we near the event.

Bullying Prevention Month
October is National Bullying Prevention Month. It is a campaign by PACER’s National Bullying Prevention Center started in 2006. It unites communities nationwide to inform, educate, and raise awareness of bullying prevention. National Bullying Prevention Month is recognized in communities across the United States, with many schools and organizations supporting and signing as partners. Please visit the following websites to learn more about what defines bullying and cyberbullying, bullying prevention and more!

- https://www.hydroassoc.org/october-is-national-bullying-prevention-month-2/ - General Information for parents and students
More than one out of every five (20.8%) students report being bullied (National Center for Educational Statistics, 2016). The federal government began collecting data on school bullying in 2005, when the prevalence of bullying was around 28 percent (U.S. Department of Education, 2015).
- Bullied students reported that bullying occurred in the following places: the hallway or stairwell at school (42%), inside the classroom (34%), in the cafeteria (22%), outside on school grounds (19%), on the school bus (10%), and in the bathroom or locker room (9%) (National Center for Educational Statistics, 2016).
- 43% of bullied students report notifying an adult at school about the incident. Students who report higher rates of bullying victimization are more likely to report the bullying (National Center for Educational Statistics, 2016).
Corona Norco Unified School District does not tolerate bullying. #CNUSDisKind - #CNUSDitTakesaVillage is an anti-bullying and school safety social media campaign aimed at fostering a safe school environment, reducing stigma, spreading positivity, and encouraging students to be kind to one another. The goal is to challenge students, parents, staff, and the community to participate in simple random acts of kindness. Students and staff are encouraged to share their stories of kindness via social media using the hashtag #CNUSDisKind and/or #CNUSDitTakesaVillage

Garden Club
Corona High School would like to express our sincere appreciation to Kellogg Garden Products in Ontario for their donation to our Garden Club of 200 bags of soil and fertilizer. This donation is valued at approximately $2500 and has made it possible for our club to expand the garden significantly. Thank you Kellogg for your support of Corona High School! Here is the link to their website: https://www.kellogggarden.com.
Blood Drive
We Dine Together
Students have the opportunity to bring their lunch and make connections with other students in a new movement/club called "We Dine Together." Being WELL-CONNECTED is part of our RAWR culture. Activities include having conversation with others during lunch, participating in ice-breakers, playing games, and enjoying some snacks. Gatherings will be held as follows:
- 1st lunch: Tuesdays in P-2.
- 2nd lunch: Wednesdays in B-12.
Whether students are shy, outgoing, or somewhere in-between, dining together is the right thing to do!
Got ASB?
A great way for your child to have a better high school experience is by getting him/her involved in any of extracurricular activities and events. An ASB card provides opportunities throughout the year for our students get involved while saving money. This little card can very well end up saving $$$ over the course of the year and can even pay for itself after only a few uses. Here are some of the perks:
- FREE admission to ALL home sporting events, excluding CIF playoffs (these are never free); that's a savings of at least $125
- Discounts on ALL dances and events (including the Performing Arts); that's another savings of at least $30
- FREE athletic patches and inserts (patches cost $20 without an ASB card and inserts cost $5); that's a potential savings of at least $25
- FREE giveaways on GOT ASB? Days
- ASB Cards can be purchased for $40 in the Student Store, but students receive benefits valued at approximately $200 (maybe even more as new activities get added to the calendar throughout the year)
Athletics
- Football: Our football season concluded on October 25th with an unfortunate loss to Norco HS at home on Senior Night. The off-season work will begin shortly to prepare for next season. The season ended with a final record of 4-6.
- Cross Country: Our Panthers have been running strong over the past few weeks. The team competed at the Inland Empire Championships where sophomores Elisa Huerta and Victor Ceja placed 1st in their races. The sophomore boys took 3rd overall and earned a trophy. The team also competed at the Mount Sac Invitational, which is one of the most challenging cross country course in Southern California. Sophomore Victor Ceja earned a 2nd place finish in the boys varsity race and Elisa Huerta took 1st in the sophomore girls race. The team will finish up the regular season on Tuesday at our final league meet competition. Hoping to move some individuals onto CIF! Let's go, Panthers!
- Girls Tennis: Our girls tennis season ended at the Big VIII prelims last week. There was much improvement with our program and the girls played hard in every match, win or lose. Thank you to Coach Osterkamp for assuming the reins after Coach Niño.
- Girls Volleyball: Corona Girls Volleyball finished up their season last week winning 10 more games than the year prior. Our program improved dramatically, but we understand there is still more work to be done. So the hard work in the off-season (conditioning, training, and competing) will continue starting this week. Coach Schroeder would like to publicly thank our teachers for their hard work and dedication in the classroom in supporting our volleyball girls. We graduated three seniors this year Elizabeth Aguilar, Jaci Glassick, and Elysium Neto. Seniors, thank you for being such wonderful role models to our younger players as our Senior student-athletes. We are already looking forward to next year.
- Cheer Squad: The Pep Squad honored their 5 seniors, Captain Alissa Patterson, Captain Kaley Attaman, Captain Jillian Pierce, Captain Mersadies Pfitzer, and 1st year member, Monique Ghadiri, at our final home football game on October 25th. They have brought much enthusiasm and spirit to the football field and will truly be missed next year. Thank you for your leadership, seniors, and to the entire squad for their continued support and enthusiasm!
Misc.
- Baseball: Don't miss our annual Halloween Intra-Squad Baseball game to be played on Halloween starting at 3:00 pm. This has become tradition as our baseball team plays against each other in an exhibition game while wearing their favorite costumes.
- Directly below is a list of our scholar-athletes based on first quarter grades and fall sports participation. Scholar-athletes consist of varsity student-athletes who have earned a GPA of at least a 3.5 during their season. Being part of a time requires a great deal of time commitment. Maintaining high grades is also very demanding, so it's always impressive when students are able to do both well. These scholar-athletes have clearly demonstrated RAWR behaviors!

California Healthy Kids Survey
The Annual California Healthy Kids Survey will be administered in 9th and 11th grade English Language Arts (ELA) classes within the next couple of weeks. A copy of the survey is available in the front office for review. Your child should have brought home the passive consent form 2 weeks ago. If you have any questions or concerns regarding your child's participation in the survey, please contact Mrs. Bogner at kbogner@cnusd.k12.ca.us or your child's ELA teacher.
- Passive Consent--Permission Request Regarding Health Survey–High School
Dear Parent or Guardian,
We are requesting your permission for your child to be a part of our school’s California Healthy Kids Survey sponsored by the California Department of Education. This important survey will help provide data to improve the school learning environment, academic achievement, and the health and well-being of our youth. It includes questions about drug abuse, safety and violence, risk of depression and suicide, and sexual orientation.
Student participation is voluntary and anonymous. Your child does not have to take the survey. No names or any other identifying information is connected to the answers except for the name of the school.
Student participation requires your permission. We hope you will encourage participation so that your child’s opinion and knowledge can be part of the information gleaned from the survey. If you do not want your child to complete the survey, you must notify the school by returning the “withdrawal form” that was sent home.
