CSD Top 3
Your monthly school district newsletter
April 6, 2022
Dear Canby families,
It is officially spring, and it’s time for another edition of the CSD Top 3, those three things we think you’d like to know, plus a wellness tip and lunch menus. Enjoy!
Student Spotlight
Congratulations to our students and adult leaders on a successful winter season of activities and sports. We celebrate all of you! This month, the spotlight is on the Canby Cougar Dance Team and our FFA chapter.
Dance
After their season was cut short in 2020 and modified in 2021, last month the five-time defending state championship Cougar Dancers took the traditional state stage once again and brought home the third-place trophy. According to Herald-Pioneer Reporter Emily Matlock, “This year’s state routine, ‘Listen,’ was a timely statement about isolation, silence and breaking down barriers to find real connections. The performance incorporated the Canby High Cantalinas choir into their finale, with the singers breaking the silence.”
The team received a standing ovation in the auditorium and from the other dance teams backstage.
Three dancers earned additional accolades. Junior Marissa Vanhoose won fifth place in the drill down contest, Senior Abigail Chaffee was named to the 6A all-state team, and Senior Olivia Coleman earned an academic scholarship. Congratulations dancers, coaches, and parents!
FFA
Canby’s FFA chapter also competed at state last month. The chapter received a gold award, first place for their National Chapter application, and a superior rating award. Senior Jessie Samarin was elected the 2022-23 Oregon State FFA Reporter and will spend the next year traveling the state representing Oregon FFA.
“I have personally experienced the positive impact state officers have on the lives of students,” Samarin said, “and having the opportunity to have the same impact on the 14,066 FFA members in our state is the best feeling in the world!”
Additionally, eight members of Canby FFA were awarded the highest honor a state FFA association can give, the Oregon State FFA Degree. Those members are: Katie Anderson, Katie Ayres, Brooke Jonas, Jacob Palacios, Jessie Samarin, Jillian Schaffner, Keegan Welander, and Kate Williams.
Upcoming Events
Kinder Kick-offs
If you have a child who will be five years old by Sept. 1, then get ready for our Kinder Kick-offs! These events are being held in-person at each of our elementary schools and will help incoming students imagine a day in the life of a kindergartner. They’ll have a chance to tour the school, meet the teachers and principal, and even receive a welcome gift bag. Trost’s dual language immersion event is complete, but there are still chances to attend neighborhood schools Carus, Eccles, Knight, or Lee on April 12 from 6-7 p.m. and Ninety-One School on April 21 from 6-7 p.m.
If you need help determining which school your child will attend, use the Clackamas County Boundary Locator. If you are unable to visit a kick-off or wish to enroll your child for kindergarten ahead of time, registration is open online now.
Spring Open Houses
Three of our elementary schools are hosting spring open houses to celebrate different events, and we want to invite the community to attend to see completed projects thanks to the generosity of voters who passed the construction bond in 2020. Join us on the following dates.
Knight Book in Common Family Night – April 21 from 5:30-7 p.m.
Trost Day of the Child – April 28 from 6-8 p.m.
Eccles Book Fair – May 18 from 6-7:30 p.m.
Student Plant Sale
Canby High School botany students are holding a spring plant sale at the high school greenhouse April 23 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. and April 26-29 from 2:45-6 p.m. Come get your flower baskets, annuals, perennials, vegetables, and herbs!
Calendars are up
Along with this year’s Canby School District family calendar, next year’s calendar is also now available online on Canby School District’s home page (under the “Calendars” tab). As decided on and approved by the board back in December, Canby School District will start each school year after Labor Day from now on. Happy planning!
Make sure your student’s health records are up to date with the opportunity below.
Free Immunization Clinic
The Oregon Health Authority requires all children to have up-to-date immunizations or an exemption by a certain date each year to stay enrolled in a public or private school. For the 2021-22 school year, that date is April 20.
To help students get up to date, Canby School District is hosting a free immunization clinic for students under 18 who are on the Oregon Health Plan or do not have health insurance. In addition to school-required immunizations, COVID-19 vaccines will also be available to all at no cost. The clinic will take place at Ackerman School on April 11 from 4-7 p.m.
