Book of the Week
This past Wednesday we gathered as a school community once again to enjoy a story. Kids in classrooms and students at home all logged on to hear Mrs. Ward read a story.
Last week we concentrated on celebrating differences. The focus of the story this week was how to look at appropriate and inappropriate reactions when you encounter something new or different. The Sandwich Swap follows the tale of two friends who do everything together. Both girls think that the other’s lunch is disgusting and can’t imagine how they could possibly eat something so gross! All is going well until one of the friends makes a judgmental comment about her friend's lunch. The disagreement escalates into an exchange of verbal insults, hurt feelings, classmates taking sides, and flying food. Mrs. Ward chose to read this story because it supports the work we have begun in teaching students how to embrace and celebrate differences. Throughout the reading, Mrs. Ward paused to share “think about” statements with the students. The story ends with the quote, "It’s easy to jump to conclusions when we come across something new or foreign or strange. But if we take the time to get to know each other, stand in each other’s shoes and listen to a different point of view, we learn something wonderful—about someone else and about ourselves.” This is a beautiful statement.
