Internet Find of the Week - January 14, 2013
Hello 2013!
Please take 14 minutes and watch the Ted talk at the bottom of this week's Jontracation. It is worth watching, and it is worth showing your students (junior high and high school). And most of all, after you watch it with your students, talk about it.
Google Chrome Web Store
For the next several weeks, I'll highlight different Google apps that just might make your life a little easier.
First, let's talk web browsers. Think back to Mr. Bowtie where we discussed browsers. The browser is the program you use to get on the Internet. If you click on the big blue E icon, you're using the Internet Explorer browser. If you're like me and you select the circle that's green, red, and yellow, you're using a Google Chrome browser.
For those of you who prefer the Google Chrome web browser, let me encourage you to visit the Google Chrome Web Store. In this store, you can find apps (similar to the apps you have on your smartphones) that run from your web browser.
Below is a screenshot of my Chrome browser. I've opened a new tab. The icons you see are all the apps that I've installed. I consider some of these apps as simply shortcuts. Take the blue Google icon. I used to type the google.com at least 50 times a day. Now, with the app, I open a new tab and select the Google search icon, and it launches a Google search window.
Other apps are much more than just a short cut. Take a look at BioDigital Human. The BioDigital Human is a 3D look at human anatomy. Its interactive tools allow to explore the body to learn about all intricacies of the various systems.

The Big Picture -- rethinking dyslexia
There are many misconceptions and misunderstandings about dyslexia. The new documentary, The Big Picture Rethinking Dyslexia, attempts to clear up many of those misconceptions.
I bought copy of The Big Picture for the library. I can promise you that every mother whose child is dyslexic would ask you to watch this documentary. So for them, I'm asking you to take 52 minutes and watch this movie.
