Greetings USD Family and Friends,

Today is Veterans Day. Please take a moment today to thank a Veteran for their service. Honoring the sacrifices many have made for our country in the name of freedom and democracy is the foundation of Veterans Day. Veterans Day was originally passed into law as a holiday to mark the end of World War I and bring awareness to soldiers who made it home safely but still made sacrifices for our country. Several of our schools planned special events and activities to honor school, local, or district veterans.

As you know, last month, the District implemented School Safety Week and focused on reviewing and practicing our safety and crisis procedures at all schools. This week both Urbana High School and Urbana Middle School reinforced the importance of why drill and practice are so critical. The Urbana Police and the FBI are still actively investigating outside threats made to UHS. UHS staff and students did a phenomenal job following our safety protocols. Both schools implemented their crisis procedures for soft lockdown and evacuation for most of the week. It is unfortunate that these actions were necessary; however, I am thankful for the care and attention that our staff gave to teaching and taking care of their students while following our safety measures. As always, the safety and security of our students and staff are of utmost importance, and we appreciate the support and cooperation of the Urbana community, our staff, students, and of course, the Urbana Police Department. While this week has caused anxiousness and concern in many, the ongoing presence and support from Urbana Police and other Champaign County first responders have been very appreciated.

Our schools are taking time to review their crisis procedures. I encourage you to take a moment to have a family conversation about school safety in the upcoming days. In the days and weeks to come, we will remain diligent and dedicated to keeping our school community safe.

In solidarity,

Dr. Ivory-Tatum

Health and Safety Info - What is RSV?

Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV) is a common respiratory virus that usually causes mild, cold-like symptoms. Most people recover in a week or two, but RSV can be serious for infants, young children, and older adults. We are seeing cases in District at UECS and elementary, and we are aware that there is a surge of RSV in the community and many active cases in our hospitals. IDPH - RSV Fact Sheet for parents

Parents should call their Doctor or healthcare provider if their child:

  • develops a fever after having a cold or has a high fever

  • has a cough or other symptoms that get worse

  • is wheezing

  • shows signs of dehydration - dry lips, headache, lethargic

Parents should get medical help right away if their child:

  • has trouble breathing or very fast breathing

  • is very tired or sleepy

  • has lips or fingernails that look blue

DPW's College and Career Week

Hats off to Dr. Preston Williams Elementary for a successful College and Career Week. They celebrated “College Shirt” Day, “Dress for Success” Day, Class Color day, and Tiger Day! DPW students visited with Colleges during a College and Career Fair. Several local businesses and business people attended to discuss their careers and job opportunities. Guest speakers visited classrooms, and there was a Touch a Truck space outside for the students.

The Lightning Thief - Percy Jackson Musical

Shout out to our UHS Theatre program for last weekend's successful Fall Musical. The UHS cast members, the production crew, and the creative team did a fantastic job and put on an amazing show.

Congratulations!

USD116's Freedom School Program

We are thrilled that our Freedom School Program has started at our new site across the street from Urbana Middle School. The program began on November 1st. The Freedom School is currently operating Mondays through Thursdays from 3:30 - 6:30 p.m. with students from Urbana High School. The students are involved in culturally relevant activities and curricula while also participating in several trauma-informed groups and interventions. We are working with UMS to add students from Urbana Middle School soon.

#TeachforUrbana Program
