This Week at Royal
May 3 - 9
Happy Sunday, Falcons!
The next week includes appreciation days for three very special groups of people:
Teacher Appreciation Week is May 3-7: Share stories about your child's teacher(s)! Please email your stories, artwork, videos, and pictures explaining what makes him/her so special! Submissions may be sent to falconstrong@royal-isd.net, and will be shared on the district website and social media. Click here to view campus celebrations.
Nurse Appreciation Week is May 6-12. National Nurse Day is May 6 and National School Nurse Day is May 12. School nurses play an integral role by bridging health and education to improve each child’s cognitive, physical, social and emotion development, regardless of whether they are physically present in school or not. • School nurses champion the whole student every day of the year. Has a Royal ISD made a difference in your life? Share your story! Submissions may be sent to falconstrong@royal-isd.net, and will be shared on the district website and social media. Click here to view campus celebrations.
Mother's Day is Sunday, May 9! MOM! MOM! MOMMY! MAMA! Think about the last time you talked to your mother just to say something nice, just because. We're used to asking moms for advice, calling for support or wishing her a happy birthday. But our moms deserve more than that. This Mother's Day, make sure she knows just how much you love and appreciate her for being the glue that holds it all together. "A mother is she who can take the place of all others but whose place no one can take." --Cardinal Mermillod
Don't forget to take a moment to say thank you to the moms, nurses, and teachers in your life!
Have a great week!

RISD Community Advisory Committee Update
Royal ISD held its second Community Advisory Committee meeting on Wednesday, April 28 at Royal Junior High. Superintendent Rick Kershner stated, “We had a great community advisory committee meeting last night. We continued to ask the community to engage with us about their wants, desires, hopes, and dreams for our students. We examined our financial situation and toured the junior high to examine possible ways to improve aging infrastructure.”
The meeting included a welcome from Superintendent Rick Kershner as well as presentations by RISD Financial Advisor Lucas Janda, RJH Principal Orlando Vargas, Facilities Director Derrick Dabney, and Steve Risser from Gallagher Construction Services. Attendees also toured the RJH campus to review the current state of the facility and received updates regarding growth within Royal ISD.
Financial Advisor Lucas Janda provided a very transparent and insightful presentation regarding existing debt (and how it is being paid off more quickly than expected) and the size of a potential bond election without a tax rate increase. He elaborated on how taxes work for various audiences (single-family homestead, business owners, ag-exempt property, and the 65 and over population). Several in attendance were able to get clear responses to their questions.
Royal ISD is appreciative of the time and input from the committee participants. We are excited to continue with the strategic planning and district belief statements as Royal continues “investing in our tomorrow”. The ultimate goal of the committee is to provide a recommendation to the Royal School Board on the facility repairs and construction needed for current and future Falcon students.
If you live within Royal ISD and would like to attend future meetings, please send an email to Christi Ginn at cginn@royal-isd.net. Please include your name and phone number with your request. (A request is required due to COVID restrictions and to ensure that all committee members receive communications regarding the meetings. All attendees will be required to wear a face mask at each meeting.)

Scam of the Week: Voice Changing “Catphish”
In a recent phishing attack that targets single men, cybercriminals show us how they use modern technology to trick their victims. The scam starts with the cybercriminal posing as a single woman and befriending their target on social media. Then, they start building rapport with the target through various interactions. Eventually, the cybercriminal sends audio messages with a woman’s voice to convince their target that they are who they claim to be.
The target doesn’t know it, but the cybercriminal is actually using a voice changing software to disguise their true identity. If the target falls for the fake audio messages, they receive a video file of their newfound love interest. Except, the file is actually a dangerous piece of malware designed to grant the cybercriminals access to the victim’s entire system.
This tactic isn’t exclusive to romantic scams, so be sure to remember these tips:
- Keep your social media accounts private and only accept friend requests from people that you know and trust.
- If you meet someone online, be sure to verify their identity. You could use a search engine to find their other social media profiles or simply ask to have a video call to make a face-to-face connection.
- Remember that cybercriminals can use more than just links within emails to phish for your information. Always think before you click!
