Weekly Update ~ March 15, 2021
Board of Education Election
Attention Eagles@home
Dear Parent or Guardian,
Eagles@home students, in grades 3 to 8, will be taking the Illinois Assessment of Readiness exam at school the week of March 29th. The tech department would like to issue two reminders in regard to testing, and at school attendance.
It is extremely important that your students’ devices come to school fully charged in order to successfully complete the exam and school day. Due to COVID restrictions, loaner iPads and laptops are very limited, and may not be available to your student if their device is not charged.
Loaner headphones will not be available. Please make sure that your student has them before departing home to attend school.
If you have any questions, please email ogstechsupport@ogschool.org

5th GRADE BOY’S NIGHT
A big thank you to Laura Reutzel for coordinating the 5th Grade Boys Night! The interactive, virtual event hosted last Wednesday by Candor Health Educator covered important topics for this age group and got the students engaged & asking questions.
8th GRADE COUNTDOWN TO GRADUATION UPDATE
In response to our recent Countdown to Graduation parent survey, the PTO has created a Countdown to Graduation Committee to identify and implement activities leading up to graduation and ensure under the current circumstances, our 8th graders finish their time at Oak Grove strong. Volunteers have been contacted and we look forward to kicking off planning in the upcoming weeks. Thank you to all the 8th grade parents that shared their interest & ideas to start celebrating the Class of 2021!
PTO CITY LOVE ASSEMBLY
Last week, the PTO sponsored three virtual, live and interactive assemblies for Oak Grove students. The music and education group, City Love, based in Philadelphia, presented separately to (i) kindergarten, 1st and 2nd grades, (ii) 3rd, 4th, 5th and 6th grades and (iii) 7th and 8th grades, throughout the school day on Friday. City Love is comprised of teachers and musicians who make music and other content for the world to spread love, hope, dialogue and healing. City Love has shared assemblies, workshops and performances at schools, colleges and conferences throughout the country with tens of thousands of students, educators and people of all ages. They were 2018-2019 Haverford College Friends in Residence and 2019 Equity in Action Grantees and won the 2020 Mid-Atlantic Song Contest Silver Award for the song, "Make It Beautiful." City Love recently released a children's album called "World of Love" about honoring our differences, standing up for each other, equity and self-love. All Oak Grove families will be receiving this album for free in the coming days to enjoy at home.
The City Love assemblies for OGS varied slightly depending on what was age-appropriate for each group. Each was a targeted and developmentally-appropriate program intended to help build community across our differences. The group used a collection of songs to engage learners to celebrate the ways in which we are all both similar and different. Many students shared details about their religion, race, where they are from, what their values are and how they define equity. Students were able to exchange ideas on what it looks like to be an upstander and how to make sense of the world they see around them. Students learned that many people, including adults, are still learning how to be kind, safe and fair to all people and that they should feel empowered, even as children and adolescents, to set good examples for everyone around them and the world.
The PTO would like to extend a big thanks to the OGS administration and tech team for making these assemblies happen, with a special humongous thank you to Principal Webb and Ms. Yarc who navigated and facilitated student participation across three live, virtual assemblies covering all nine grades for Eagles at Home and Eagles at School. The PTO would also like to thank our Chairs, Elizabeth O’Neill and Raabia Khan Mohammed, for their work organizing exciting and diverse programs & assemblies for our students!

Luck Around the World
Happy Monday! As we begin our spirit week, our students watched this video about different forms of luck around the world and completed a mini activity. The conversations were lively and the students were able to gain perspectives about their classmates as well as the different ways the concept of luck presents itself throughout the world. Thank you for your support and we hope your family enjoys spirit week.
Curriculum Corner
Hello Oak Grove Community,
It’s finally here! We made it to spring break 2021… Hooray!
While you may still be at home, perhaps there are a few things you haven’t yet tried and now you have a few days to be creative, relax and enjoy some time away from the screens. Here are a few ideas to get you thinking:
Have you made your own bubble recipe yet? Here’s one to try.
Have you camped in your backyard with a tent? It’s like a vacation but without the packing.
Have you made a treasure hunt with actual clues to locate objects? Here’s one so you don’t have to make your own.
Have you had an indoor snowball fight? Roll up balls of paper or white socks to have your very own indoor battle!
Perhaps it’s time for a taco party :) You can read or listen to, Dragons LoveTacos, make your own taco bar and swing at pinata - Who doesn’t love Taco Tuesday?
