Students Helping Others
Kooper Avendano spent a week this summer in Colorado on a mission trip. They built garden boxes, painted, and put new flooring in a low-income clinic. She worked a food pantry as well. This weekend she made over 1000 flood kits for flood victims.
Sachin Kumar (7th Grade) - On 17th we volunteered at San Antonio Downtown serving meals for people in need through the organization "Taking to the Streets".
Natasha Workman volunteers every other Sunday morning in the two year old class at our church. We attend Currey Creek and she chooses to serve alongside her parents and younger sister. Natasha does a great job having a good attitude to play with the kids, teaching them Bible stories, preparing and serving snacks. She has made it a habit of serving others and first started volunteering regularly when she was in 4th grade. She has also volunteered to set up for community events and distributed food to families at Hill Country Daily Bread.
Nicole Banigo volunteers at a non profit organization called Special Reach. This organization serves the needs of kids who are on the spectrum by hosting parties and summer camps so the kids are stimulated while having fun. This time helps caregivers and parents get a well deserved break from their caregiving duties.
Adrian Ekblad and several other BMSS students are members of Scouts BSA troops in the Boerne area and collectively accumulate hundreds of volunteer service hours per year in the Boerne area. This volunteer work includes a variety of things, including cleaning up trails and brush on camp and church properties, picking up trash along roadways, and helping with Eagle Scout projects. Recent Eagle Scout projects have included the construction of an exercise yard and K-9 facilities for Boerne PD, building a fire ring at St. Peter’s Catholic Church, building and installing new benches for Cibolo Nature Center, and preparing emergency weather kits for families in need who are served by Hill Country Daily Bread.
Scouts BSA is the name of the program run by the Boy Scouts of America organization that now includes separate troops for either boys or girls. Troop 180 is an example of a girls’ troop in Boerne that formed three years ago and has been doing great things.
Leah Kim, 7th grader, serves in a therapy dog ministry called Canines for Christ with her therapy dog, Belle. She visits various community events sharing joy, comfort, and the hope of Jesus with the community. Her most notable visits were to Uvalde to provide the devastated community with some healing and hope after the school shooting. She served during memorial services for 2 of the victims at Rushing-Estes-Knowles Funeral Home. She is also currently scheduled to return to a private school in Uvalde on 10/10/22 to provide continued pet therapy to the students that were affected by the tragedy.
Kaitlyn Johnson serving on the youth leadership team at Mission City Church!
Ella Younts (BMSS 6th grader) took the initiative this summer to research different volunteer opportunities in the Boerne area. She was really Interested in volunteering at an animal shelter given her love of animals. Ella was disappointed to learn that you have to be at least 12 years old to volunteer at Boerne Animal Care Services, but she didn’t let that stop her. She emailed the shelter and asked if they would make an exception to the age requirement for a mature 11 year old. Ella’s request was granted, and she has been volunteering in kitty socialization and dog walking. So far it has been a rewarding experience, and Ella plans to continue volunteering throughout middle school and beyond.
I would like to recognize Roselyn, who goes by Rose. She’s in the 6th grade and she hugs the special needs kids every time she sees them and I always see the smiles on their faces when they go back with their group. I would just like to recognize her for her friendliness to the kids who are different than other kids. From Tessa Blissit
Ryleigh Vela volunteers in New Braunfels with her Grandma at the thrift store for St. Peter and Paul Church. She bags the customers purchases and helps around the store as needed.
