An Important Note About Hunter Safety & School Safety
This next week can be a busy week for all those students and families who partake in the upcoming deer hunting season. We want to remind all who may be out in the woods are traveling around the state of Michigan this upcoming week that you need to make sure you do not accidentally or intentionally leave any of your firearms or knives used for hunting in your vehicle, backpack, coat, etc and then bring those items on campus. Remember that the State of Michigan has a weapons free school zone policy and every year, we hear about students being disciplined for what is most often a mistake because they accidently brought inappropriate hunting gear to school. Please help us by checking all your belonging and vehicles prior to returning to school after your outing.

Teaching & Learning
The Most Dangerous Game
The Most Dangerous Game was part of a unit on short stories that freshmen in Mr. Santo and Mr. Mead's classes studied. Before tackling these short stories, there was a two-day session where they learned basic literary elements and terms, as well as higher order concepts including:
- Metaphors and similes
- Double entendre
- Direct and indirect characterization
- Inference/foreshadowing
- Theme
- Plot
- Setting
- Mood
- Tone
- Alliteration
Finally, students were given a map assignment which was a visual interpretation of Ship-Trap Island--the setting of "The Most Dangerous Game". This afforded students an opportunity to use the author's imagery in writing and demonstrate their understanding by creating a map of the island.
Key elements and events of the story are depicted on the Ship Trap Island map, complete with legend (key) and compass rose, Take a look of some examples of their work!

Positivity Project - This Week's Theme: Bravery
This week our school community will be focusing on the character strength of Bravery. Bravery means you act with mental, moral, or physical strength even when you know things are difficult or scary.
Bravery refers to voluntary (not coerced) action in the face of a dangerous circumstance. This strength involves judgement; the brave person must have an understanding of the risks and consequences involved in acting. According to Socrates and Plato, forethought separates acts of valor from acts of rashness. This means that bravery isn’t simply fearlessness, but instead the overcoming of fear.
Overcoming fears is critically important in individual development, as it allows the person to do more and become more. A person can be brave every single day. For example, some people with social anxiety are brave just by leaving their house and talking with people. On a physical level, bravery allows us to overcome fears, such as swimming or playing a sport. And, on a moral level, doing what we know to be right, despite the risks, gives us the sense that we are acting on behalf of a larger purpose.
To practice and encourage the character strength of bravery with your child, please visit the Positivity Project’s P2 for Families (password: P2) where together you will watch a video, read a quote and talk about the answers to three questions.

Genesee Youth Commission
Are you, or do you know, a high school student that is looking to change the world for the better? Or young people who are very engaged in politics? Young people have innovative ideas and aren’t mired in the cynicism of so many adults. We want engaged young people to apply for the Genesee County Youth Commission.
The Genesee County Board of Commissioners, Flint and Genesee Group: Education & Talent, YouthQuest, and Michigan State University Extension 4-H Youth Development programs are collaborating to create an advisory group. These youth will learn about county government, share concerns with the Genesee County Board of Commissioners, and work to improve our community. Highlights of the program include interacting with elected officials, touring the jail and other county facilities, and working with a diverse group of like-minded teenagers from across the county.
Youth Commission members will meet twice a month on the 1st and 2nd Wednesday of the month from 4-5:30 at the Genesee County Administration Building from January through June. The program will also include a 3-day trip to Lansing. There is no cost to participate, but students are expected to be fully engaged in the process.
Please apply at https://forms.gle/GRLhQ33deZVWd63Q8 We will be selecting one high-school age youth from each County Commissioner’s district. If you have more questions, contact Darren Bagley at bagleyda@msu.edu. Applications are due December 1.
