Eagle Update: October 28, 2022
Barton Hills Elementary
Can you believe we are almost at the end of October and next week we start November? Speaking of the end of October, we all know that Monday is Halloween. We encourage students to join our spirit day of Orange and Black and not wear costumes to school. We want those costumes to stay home and safe until they are needed. This includes not wearing any masks, costume parts, or painted faces to school.
In addition to all the Halloween excitement this week we have several other events. Here are the highlights:
- Sunday, October 30 is our Fall Grounds Work Day from 1-4. We have many projects and would love your help.
- I wanted to make sure and call your attention to the information in last week's newsletter about the Human Sexuality and Responsibilities parent orientation meeting on Wednesday, November 2nd. I've included the specifics below in the Latest News section.
- Our PTA Carnival is Saturday, November 5th from 1 to 4 pm here at the school. Please be watching for the PTA newsletter with all the important details. One item of note is that medallions will be on sale before and after school this week and wristbands can be purchased in advance.
Thank you for your continued support of our school community.

Human Sexuality and Responsibilities Parent Orientation
An age-appropriate human sexuality and responsibility unit focusing on conscious, healthy, and respectful choices will be taught to all Austin ISD students. The unit is taught to students in kindergarten through high school in the months of November/December and during the months of April/May for students enrolled in the high school health education course for the Spring semester. Lessons for all grade levels have been revised for the 2022-2023 school year to meet the updated health TEKS and new state laws.
On Wednesday, November 2nd from 7:45 to 8:45 am, we will have a Parent Orientation in our library with Mrs. Achtermann and Mrs. White. The purpose of this meeting will be to:
Inform about state and local Human Sexuality and Responsibility education curriculum policies
Including information regarding Opt-IN processes
Share Human Sexuality and Responsibility lesson overviews
Answer any questions you may have
If you are unable to attend, all HS&R Lessons can be accessed on the AISD Website at: https://www.austinisd.org/pe-health/health-education/hsr/lessons

Report Cards
Report Cards go out Friday, Nov. 4. How will I receive my child's report card?
Parents have three options of obtaining their student’s report card.
1. AISD Portal
The AISD Portal serves as the primary resource for all of the services provided online to parents/guardians. This site gives parents/guardians direct access to their student's information, online registration, district-wide information and links to other often used services.
2. Frontline Parent Self Serve
Parent Self-Serve is the portal that allows parents to view their child's schedule, attendance, and grades. Parents can email teachers and set notification alerts if they want to receive emails when their child has been marked absent or has a missing assignment. Parents can also change their contact information here which will update it on their contact record in Frontline SIS.
3. Direct Email
Report cards will be direct emailed on Friday, Nov. 4 to the enrolling parent email on file.

AISD Bond Election
Early voting in the 2022 Bond election begins Oct. 24. Election Day is Nov. 8. Please see the flyer below to see the proposals for Barton Hills. You can find more information on the Bond package and what is proposed for each campus/facility here.
Volunteering On Campus
We know parents are excited to support our school through volunteer opportunities - and we're excited to have you! ALL school volunteer opportunities will start with the classroom teacher or sponsoring staff member. For example, volunteer opportunities for the Library will be coordinated through Ms. Ewing; classroom gardening, field trips chaperones, classroom guest readers will be coordinated through the classroom teacher. Once teachers are ready for volunteers the following will happen:
- We will set up the volunteer opportunity on the APIE website.
- Teachers/Event Sponsor will email parents the name of the volunteer opportunity and directions for completing the background checks.
- Mrs Ewing will let you know when the background check is complete
- You will bring your driver's license to Kathy Carr in the office for verification
- Once verification is complete, Mrs. Ewing will let you and the classroom teacher know you are cleared to volunteer.
If you have questions about the volunteer opportunities please contact your child's teacher.
Students Leaving School Early
If your child needs to leave early for an appointment, please notify your child's teacher and the front office. When you arrive at the school, you can come to the front door or call from your car and then we will call for your student. We will not call for students until you are here. With our new schedules (and a new phone number system) please leave PLENTY of time (at least 10 minutes) from the time you call us to the time your child is ready to leave. If you have an appointment right after school, it is best to pick up your student no later than 2:45 to avoid the dismissal crunch. **If you have not had your driver's license scanned into our Raptor System in the last year, we will ask you to bring in your driver's license to the office***
