National School Breakfast Week
National School Breakfast Week was a busy week at East Allen County Schools with incredibly fulfilling moments. Heritage K-12 had their students write an essay on who their superhero was and why. It provided great insight into some of their lives. Students had the privilege of meeting the grand prize winner’s superhero – his uncle. They presented him with a certificate and some goodies and gave him the essay his nephew wrote about him. As he stood in front of them reading it, his eyes filled with tears. It was such an awesome moment. It was so touching for all of them. He was so humbled by it all.
The staff found strength from each other as there were some rough days. They laughed as they made smoothies, and banana split sundaes, brainstormed over bulletin board ideas, menu planning, and staff placement for the week. All this while still being short staffed, products being out of stock, and having to pack, deliver, and then unpack 23 or so coolers each day for Elementary students. But they did it! Here are the highlights of their National School Breakfast Week 2022.
EACS INCREASED THEIR BREAKFAST TOTALS BY 30% COMPARED TO LAST YEAR.
The lunch menu for the day included green eggs and ham, oodles of nooldes lasagna, and cat's hat parfait!
School City of Hammond hosted USDA to celebrate NSBW (pictures below).
Darrough Chapel Early Learning Center served sugar snap peas as their Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Program snack. The students' faces show that this was a new vegetable they were discovering!
We really believe school lunch should be fun! From our elementary team dressing up for Halloween; having a 'Try Day Friday' debuting commodity apricot cups; our kitchen elf Jack kept our elementary kids entertained during the Christmas holiday season; we celebrated National Popcorn Day and our junior/senior students got to try their hands at using chopsticks to celebrate the Chinese New Year.

Have you ever tried a habanada pepper?!
One of Indiana’s Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Program schools served locally-grown habanada peppers. All the floral sweetness of the famous habanero, minus the burn!
