Around the School Spotlight
Mrs. Henderson’s 3rd grade class kicked off their Social Studies unit by discussing their connections to other parts of the world. They talked about their ancestors and Mrs. Henderson shared her connection to Scotland. If your child is in her class, ask them about the kilt that’s passed down generationally! They also had a great discussion about the ways food and clothing connect us to different parts of our world.
Arrival/Dismissal - Car Line
I am happy to report that for 3 consecutive days, we’ve had all cars exit our car line, with students picked up, within 10 minutes of the 2:15 bell ringing. That’s pretty amazing! Thank you for your help with this. What commonly slows the line down is parents/guardians getting out of their vehicles and/or not moving forward completely to unload/load. That said, things are running smoothly overall. We appreciate your help with this!
Student Safety
Save the Date!
Our Back to School Night will be held on Thursday, September 21st from 6-7:30pm. Our evening will look a bit different this year, as we’re planning to include kids as well! We want this evening to be a celebration of school and a time for teachers and parents to interact in an informal setting. Dinner will be part of the evening as well, so mark your calendars and look for more information in the coming weeks!
Student Directory/Recognition
Directory information (such as student/parent names and phone numbers) may be requested by room parents during the school year to obtain assistance for various school events. Students may also be recognized for various academic, activity, or personal achievements. This recognition may be in an announcement, in print, or on the District website; both with student information and/or a photograph. Parents have the right to request that student information not be released. This request must be in writing. Requests may be revised at any time in writing to be effective within a ten-day period. Please email Kellie Johnson at kmjohson@sherwood.k12.or.us if you would like to opt your student out.
Attendance
Regular and timely attendance is important in school. When students are here, they are able to learn, engage with their teachers and peers, and increase their sense of belonging and community. As a district, our schools will be communicating with families periodically regarding attendance. Each absence adds up and oftentimes, the more students are absent, the more they feel behind or disconnected. When students are tardy, they miss key instruction in the mornings and the opportunity to start their day with their class. Our final bell rings at 7:55 and our activity entrance doors open to welcome students at 7:30am. Ultimately, we just want your kids here! :) We know life happens and kids get sick. Below are some guidelines around illness and when to keep kids home. We appreciate your partnership with this!
When to Keep Students Home
With the beginning of flu season starting soon, we would like to share a reminder of when to keep your student(s) home. See the information below from the Oregon Department of Education and Oregon Heath Authority. This information is also available on the District Website under the Health Services Department tab and then policies. Please help us keep our families and staff healthy!
Smart Snacks
It is a priority for Sherwood School District to provide a school environment that fosters healthy eating habits for our students. This year all foods and beverages offered to students outside of the School Meal Program will meet Oregon Smart Snack nutrition standards, with some exceptions for celebratory events and community activities. These exceptions are specific to building-levels. If you would like to learn more, please reach out to your child's school.
