6th GRADERS TOUR WASHINGTON, D.C.!
On Tuesday, our 6th-grade students embarked on an unforgettable field trip to explore the rich history of our nation's capital. The day was filled with awe-inspiring moments and enriching experiences as the students visited iconic landmarks, including the Lincoln Memorial, Washington Monument, WWII Memorial, and the U.S. Capitol Building.
At the WWII Memorial, the students were immersed in a tribute to the brave men and women who sacrificed so much during World War II. The memorial offered a somber yet poignant reminder of the sacrifices made for the freedoms we enjoy today.
The final stop of the day was the U.S. Capitol Building, a symbol of our nation's governance. The students had the unique opportunity to witness the center of our nation's legislative process. They were inspired by the architecture and history of this iconic structure, reinforcing the importance of active citizenship and participation in our democracy.
A special thank you to all the 6th grade teachers & parent volunteers who made this field trip possible. The memories and lessons learned during this day will undoubtedly stay with our students for years to come.

GUIDANCE/ COMMUNITY OPPORTUNITIES
Dear Parents of 6th and 8th Grade Students:
As we continue our health and safety education efforts at North Middle School, we will be conducting an anonymous student survey about the school climate, including bullying, violence, alcohol and drug use. The survey information will assist us in making informed decisions by providing us with the data we need to evaluate our safety/bullying and drug education programs.
To gather this information, we have chosen a Pride Surveys questionnaire. Pride Surveys has over 30 years’ experience surveying students in school systems across the U.S. Survey procedures have been developed to protect your child’s privacy and allow for anonymous participation. While we encourage all students to participate, the decision to participate is voluntary. You may opt to send a refusal for your child’s participation. Alternatively, your child will have the opportunity to refuse at the time of the survey. There will be no action against you or your child if your child does not participate.
If you prefer that your child not participate, please inform our counselors, in writing, before 10/16/2023 as the survey will be administered the 10/17/2023. A summary of the information gathered will be shared with parents when the results are obtained.
We appreciate your working with us as we continue our efforts to guide our children towards safe and healthy behaviors.
HEALTH CLINIC INFORMATION
Shenandoah Community Health visits our school every Thursday. Students can be seen for a variety of reasons, including immunizations and school sports physicals.
If you want your child to be seen in the mobile clinic by a medical professional, please contact the main office for more information!
PREPARING FOR PARENT/ TEACHER CONFERENCES
Dear Middle School Parents and Guardians,
We are excited to invite you to our upcoming Parent/Teacher Conferences scheduled for October 26th, from 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm. This crucial event provides an invaluable opportunity for parents, teachers, and students to collaborate and discuss academic progress, goals, and strategies that can enhance student success.
The relationship between parents, teachers, and students plays a fundamental role in a child's educational journey. Research consistently demonstrates that when parents actively engage in their child's education, student success and achievement significantly improve. This partnership fosters a supportive learning environment that enhances not only academic performance but also overall well-being.
During the parent/teacher conferences, we encourage open communication and the sharing of insights regarding your child's strengths, challenges, and learning style. This exchange allows us to work together to tailor educational strategies that align with each student's unique needs, aspirations, and potential.
To ensure a productive and meaningful conference, we encourage you to sign up for a session using our online registration system. PARENTS, DO YOU NEED SCHOOLOGY ACCESS?
*Our librarian, Ms. Mills, is teaching students about our digital databases this month with a "trick-or-treat" station activity. Students travel to four "doors" in the library to find a bit of information using an online database. Then they scan a QR code for a "treat" or "trick" video to watch after they have collected their database information! Thanks Ms. Mills for helping our students develop their research skills!
*8th grade SS students are creating digital posters to hang at several local businesses. The posters are part of a larger service project collecting personal hygiene items for local veterans at the VA hospital. Students across the grade levels are competing to win best poster so their poster will be displayed at these business locations: 167th Federal Credit Union, Martinsburg North Middle, Federal Credit Union, John’s Pool Supplies, Lewis Paint and Wallpaper, Mimi’s and Papa’s Dips and more, and all 3 locations of First United Bank and Trust! More information to come when we have the donation sights ready for drop off!
*In 7th grade Social Studies, students simulated a Market Economy on Friday. Students were broken up into producers and consumers. The producers had to make products to sell and the consumers had to get the most products with their money. Monday we switch to a command economy to see how it differs.
*Ms. Heck's students did a cell theory station lab. They got to explore what the scientists found when they first looked under the microscope many years ago. Students looked at plant cells, animal cells from the small intestine, cork, pond water, and made their own cheek cell slides! Ms. Heck's PBL class also finished their stem projects this week! They had to research the aspects of growing the best raised garden bed for strawberries.
*Ms. Mangold and Coach Butts have been busy in gym creating a new game - Pez Ball! Students have been having a lot of fun playing this exciting new game! Check out the tournament winners in the pictures below!
