Principal's Message
Tēnā koutou katoa e te whānau
It was lovely to have so many parents attend last weeks Mihi Whakatau. Our door is always open.
We are working at further developing whānau Friday and will be sending a survey out next week to get some ideas from you all.
On a Thursday it is my pleasure to working as a Co-lead of Piritahi supporting our 21 schools to make a difference to our collective learners. Dona Ferrier-Ferguson acts as Principal on the day that I am not at school. In term 3 I have been awarded a sabbatical and will be exploring the impact of Covid on learning and achievement as well as spending some time with our son and his wife in London.
Nga mihi,
Gaylene Beattie
Huakina Mai - Positive Behaviour
Huakina Mai focusses each fortnight on one of our school expectations. Everyday our notices have the school expectations, often with an artefact to promote discussion. We aim for our whole school to learn about our school respects and display these through our actions.
This fortnight we are focussing on:
We show integrity
At school we speak about integrity as showing kindness, being truthful, being honest and being fair. We also talk about doing the right thing everyday in every way.
Wow! That's A1 Quality!
The following students received A1 certificates at the last Assembly: Ayla Aleman, Hudson Galt, Eliza Batterson, Brooklyn MacDonald, Elijah Smith, Florence Moran, Henrietta Beattie, Achilles Talaoc, Maddison Fyfe, Harry Barnsley, Grayson Skinner, Mackenzie Wallace, Alex Keane, Madeleine Cook, Mason Chapman & Bella Buntha.
Welcome New Students
The following students have joined us this year at Springlands:
Shaelyn Stuart, Summer Tynan-Moa, Hafizah Abdul Munaf & Salman Abdul Munaf
Toilets
There has been some concern expressed recently about the cleaning of the middle toilets - especially the boys. For the last week we have been monitoring and have made some changes to the number of children using these toilets and to the cleaning schedule to improve this. The staff are also discussing toilet etiquette and directing children to their toilet to prevent overuse.
Mark (caretaker) has given it a thorough clean and will be monitoring this regularly. If you do find things that are not working in the school please let us know. We appreciate your input and will try and address any concerns as soon as possible. You could all help by reminding the children to flush the toilets, wash their hands and put the paper towel that is used to dry your hands, in the bin.Property Survey
The board are currently doing an asset plan for 2023, and would like your input on your priorities for spending on resources and property. Please click here to give us your input.
We are planning to renovate Rooms 6 & 7 under our Ministry of Education 5 year plan.
Tiger turf - A long with several other schools, we have ordered the tiger turf for the small field.
The plan at this stage is to have the first stage of this work completed in the next holidays. It is likely the tiger turf will be a while away, however we have been assured that is worth waiting for.
We are supporting the 2022 leavers gift. At the end of last year the year 6 designed a deck area and garden to improve the facilities outside Room 19. They wanted to create a learning space for all. We will start on this project shortly.
Painting - Conleys Painting and Decorating are making great progress in giving the school a new paint job. This work should be completed in the next holidays. We are really impressed with the work done so far.
GO MAD Cyclone Gabrielle Support Fundraiser
Thank you so much for supporting the Cyclone Gabrielle Hawkes Bay Relief Fundraiser. We’ve all seen the devastation left by Cyclone Gabrielle earlier this month, especially in communities in the Hawkes Bay, and it is great the Springlands School community is able to show our support through this fundraiser.
Through Pizza sales and mufti donations we raised a total of $908.20 .This will be donated to the Red Cross NZ Disaster Fund to assist in areas where a local state of emergency has been declared.
Lost property
The lost property box is beginning to fill up. There are lots of unclaimed togs, towels, swimming goggles and unnamed sweatshirts. Could you please check that all your child’s uniform etc are clearly named so we can help return the items to their owners
Gardening with Tania
Room 15 and 16 have enjoyed their Thursday mornings learning in the garden with Tania. They have been making compost , planting seedlings , harvesting crops and caring for our plants. As part of Whānau Friday Room 15 roasted potatoes from the garden and enjoyed participating in shared kai.
Seaweek
Seaweek – Kaupapa Moana 2023 takes place from 4 – 12 March. The theme for this year is “Ko au te moana, ko te moana ko au – I am the sea, the sea is me”.
It is a national week about the sea and encourages Kiwi's to renew their relationship with our oceans and to learn about the amazing creatures that live within it.You can get involved in a range of activities and actions during the week such as joining a beach clean up.Click on the link to find out what is happening in our region. https://seaweek.org.nz/

Subway Manual Order Form Phase Out
This is just a friendly reminder that manual subway orders will be phased out at the end of this term. Please make contact with the school office if you are unable to order online and we can come to a special arrangement.
Please click on the link below to view the online ordering process and price change
Kowhai Swimming Sports
The Kowhai team are celebrating all the hard mahi they have been putting into class swimming sessions with a team swimming sports next Thursday. Parents can show their support by ensuring children continue to bring their togs and towel each day next week. As this is our first team event for the year and with the limited space at the pool area this event will be for the Kowhai classes only. We will be sharing photos and videos of the event with parents and families.
Sports
Winter sports sign ups will be coming out later this term, please keep an eye out on the app for information. Now is a good time to have conversations with your children about what they may want to play in terms 2 and 3. We will have school hockey, netball and basketball teams.
Please carefully consider choices as late entries are not always accepted and withdrawing during the season impacts other children’s ability to enjoy their sporting experience.
Rugby and soccer teams are organised through local clubs, please keep an eye out for muster day information on club facebook pages and/or the local newspaper.
