Just Breathe. These words sound so simple, but this week, more than ever, we’ve ALL needed reminders to just breathe and be mindful. Mindfulness is our ability to attend to the moment with curiosity and without judgement. Remember that yesterday is history and tomorrow is a mystery. This moment is a gift, that’s why it is called a PRESENT Moment.
With this in mind, I think it’s a great time to review relaxation strategies. Here are a few of my favorites for children and adults alike:
· Take deep breaths several times a day. You can calm a racing heart by breathing in your nose, holding your breath for three seconds, and then breathing out your mouth. You can pretend you are breathing in your favorite scent and blowing out birthday candles when you exhale.
· Use your 5 “SPIDEY SENSES” by noticing 5 things you can see, 4 things you can touch, 3 things you can hear, 2 things you can smell, and 1 thing you can taste. This is a grounding technique that helps switch off the part of the brain that is feeling panicky or sending signals to a stomach to get upset/anxious.
· Tense and relax muscles. You can start practicing this by squeezing your hands as tightly as possible for three seconds and then opening your hands. Repeat this at least three times, and notice your hands relaxing and warming as blood flows through your fingers.
· Focus on how long you can stand on one foot.
· Have your child create a spot where he/she can keep some things that are go-to distractors. This can provide a break from worries and help calm your child.
· To quickly refocus/regroup, you can try chewing mint gum (or sucking on a mint). This strong mint flavor can help shift the mindset. You can also try using cold water or holding ice in your hands.
· Use an app, such as: Calm, Fluid, Headspace, Smiling Mind, Breathe Kids, or Breathe, Think, Do with Sesame.

Update on attendance
We recognize that there are students who may be in the situation where they are sharing a device and will be unable to log into all synchronous sessions. For this reason, the following protocols are established to address this issue:
- Families will contact the attendance line of your child’s school to report that their child may not be able to attend synchronous zoom sessions due to sharing of a device. Families only need to do this once (not every day.)
- For attendance purposes a student must complete the Daily Attendance Assignment assigned by the teacher in the Google Classroom
- Attendance is required in all special area classrooms. (i.e. music, library, art, physical education)
- Students who are unable to log into the synchronous session will not be held accountable for attendance at synchronous zoom sessions. Their attendance will be based on completion of the Daily Attendance Assignment.
If your student will be unable to attend all synchronous (Zoom) sessions due to sharing a device, please contact the school attendance line and leave a message with the student’s name and homeroom. The attendance line for Arrowhead is listed below:

Message from Nurse Kelly
Give Kids Sight Day is an annual event.
Pandemic? Well, yes, that’s a new challenge.
But where there’s a Wills, there’s a way.
With safety foremost in everyone’s minds, the Sight Day community is busy at work designing the best possible event to help as many children as we can.
Wills Eye Hospital is adapting their telehealth services for Sight Day to provide a “Telehealth-a-thon” for initial vision screenings. Instead of hundreds of families lined up around the block, PCCY will mail out eye charts to homes, and remote screeners will guide parents how to set up the chart at the appropriate distance and conduct vision screenings.
Thanks for everything Arrowhead! You are the best!
Enjoy the weekend!
