PRINCIPAL CORNER
APRIL
Dear OSES Families,
Wow, what a way to start April!
There were a lot of activities at school this week. The STEM Fair, the talent show, and the World Health Day are just a few examples. Thank again to all the families who volunteered and attended these events. Many more exciting things are in store for us!
Congratulations to our OSES Mathletes who competed in the Math League Orlando District Championship last Saturday where they received 1st Place for Team Award!
Additional congratulations to all the students who participated in the Elementary Science Olympiad competition. OSES placed second overall, and many of the team’s students also won awards in their respective categories.
If you didn't already know, April is National Poetry Month. We should take this opportunity to honor poets and poetry for the vital role they play in our society and the sheer pleasure they bring us.
On that note:
Roses are red,
violets are blue.
I hope you have a good weekend,
I will too. 😊
Poet and didn’t even know it,
Mrs. Greene

THIS WEEK IN GRADES K-6
KINDERGARTEN
Students in Kindergarten have been working hard this week on finishing our STEM fair projects. On Wednesday students were able to view and vote on their favorite projects. Ms. Volden’s class won for our grade! In reading, students in Ms. Volden’s class have continued learning about plants. This week we read poems about what part of a plant we eat and a funny fable called “The Talking Vegetables”. In math we have had fun learning about data and reading different kinds of graphs such as tally charts, pictographs, and bar graphs.
FIRST
Students in first grade are learning about plants and so Ms. Lozano’s class had an activity where students went more in depth and learned about chlorophyll, how water travels up the stem, reading tree rings, and plants needing carbon dioxide. We are very thankful to have great parent volunteers to enrich our learning experience! The Destination Imagination club along with a group from Ms. DiNuzzo’s class also participated at UCF STEM day. The students were able to see how robots are programmed, different STEM presentations, and enjoyed visiting the Geobus which is powered by solar panels and has a lot of cool gadgets. This Friday is first grade’s field trip to Gatorland!
SECOND
Students in second grade have been enjoying Quarter 4 so far. They are learning about life cycles in Science; In Math, they are learning about Measurement and Geometry this month; Students have been enjoying reading chapter books and are showing their strengths in Language Arts; In Social Studies, students will be learning about government and economics this month. Ms. Sonn’s class did an excellent job on the Study Island Blue Ribbon Challenge, with 100% of the class completing ALL ribbons in Math and Language Arts! Great job, students!!
April is a great time in second grade as students grow and mature, becoming ready to start next year as third graders! It is also a time when we review what has been learned in all of second grade and prepare students for their final assessment of the year.
At OSES, students are frequently involved in fun activities, hands-on activities, and creative enrichment learning experiences. Students have enjoyed learning about the Scientific Method and experiments the last few months. They participate in the STEM Fair on April 5th. On Friday, April 7, World Health Day, the class will hear from a nurse and a surgeon. On next week, Ms. Sonn’s second graders will pair up with a fifth grade class for “STEM Buddies”.

THIRD
Third grade had a BLAST at our U.S. Travel Fair on Wednesday! Each of our six classrooms represented one of the five regions of the U.S. through student-made “floats” and tastings of local snacks and cuisine! Mr. Frazer’s class was proud to represent the Northeast, and we came dressed in our best tacky tourist attire to tour the other regions together! Everybody say cheese! I’m so glad none of my students forgot to put sunscreen on their noses!
FOURTH
Fourth grade kicked off this week with the fourth and final Drop Everything and Write. This assessment gives our students the chance to show what they know and write essays in informational and persuasive formats. Also this week was the STEM Fair. The winner in 4th grade was Spencer Campbell from Mr. Mateer’s class, but everyone that entered showed their understanding of the scientific method. Coming up soon we have the St. Augustine field trip, so keep an eye on your email for any last minute information, changes, or reminders. Last but not least, on Friday, the students got to enjoy visits from medical professionals for World Health Day! Be sure to ask what they learned!
FIFTH
Mrs. Galan’s class finished making dioramas of different biomes around the world. Students also wrote detailed reports about the types of vertebrates, their classifications, and adaptations that lived in their biomes. The reports also included climate and plant life information.
For Math Mrs. Galan’s class finished learning about histograms, and box plots.
SIXTH
In sixth grade, we are learning this week about 2D Geometry. We are learning how to find the area of a triangle, composite figures, and finding the missing dimension in a quadrilateral figure. Next week, we will start learning about 3D Geometry.
In STEM class, students were introduced to the third part of Engineering Design which is Go Fish: Engineering Prosthetic Tail (Engineering Everywhere). Students were able to understand the 8 Engineering Design Steps that guide them in solving engineering challenges. The first activity under this unit is “Engineering a Life vest.” Students were able to create/design a model life vest for a model dog.
Next week, we will talk about “Engineering prosthetic legs.” Students will also have the chance to experience GeoBus on April 24-25.
SPECIALS
This week in Art class kindergarten learned more about coloring, the color wheel, what colors look good together, et. They also learned about radial design based on the work of Kandinsky and created a beautiful and colorful radial design on a paper plate that started in the middle with one sticker dot. Students then built on that dot in concentric circle designs. As an introduction we watch the read aloud book called The Dot.
4th and 5th grade has been working on their Tessellation project based on the works of MC Escher. Each student chooses either two warm or two cool colors and fills in their lizard template using color, value and shading. After selecting a quote from a famous artist and writing it on their lizard we cut the lizards out and will assemble them as a large tessellation/puzzle.
WORLD HEALTH DAY
OSES celebrated World Health Day by inviting medical professionals to present to our students! We appreciate them volunteering their time and visiting multiple classrooms to discuss their profession and how they help the community.
