Call for help in investigating kink identity - scientific research
From MasterRS
Hello Kinksters,
● Does a person’s kink identity have certain features shared with other kinksters?
● Can a person’s kink identity be measured accurately, through a survey?
● Do peoples’ kink identities vary by age, class, race/ethnicity, geography, gender, or sexual orientation?
We are asking adults to participate in an online survey study of kink identity. This study was developed in conjunction with community members and academic researchers involved in the KISS Project - The Kink Identity and Sexuality Study.
You are invited to participate in a study to test an idea: there are several fundamental aspects to having a kink identity, and these fundamental aspects can be scientifically measured. If you are currently in the U.S.A, are a legal adult (usually 18 years or older), proficient in English, and are currently involved in kink activities, relationships or communities, you are eligible to participate in this study.
You will be asked to complete an internet survey asking about your sense of having a kink identity, your enjoyment (or not) of several BDSM activities, your levels of satisfaction with your sexual experiences, your involvement in the kink communities, and demographic items. It should take you approximately 60 minutes to complete.
Some people will be asked to take a follow-up survey approximately two weeks later. These people are chosen at random to be invited for this second survey, and that survey will take approximately 45 minutes to complete.
The study is being conducted by Dr. Richard A. Sprott, Ph.D. of the Community-Academic Consortium for Research on Alternative Sexualities (CARAS). This study has been approved by the CARAS Institutional Review Board (IRB). The study has also been reviewed and endorsed by the CARAS community advisory board, the Research Advisory Committee.
If you wish to proceed to the survey at this time, please click on the following link: Kink Identity Study
Thank you for your consideration. We hope this study will help to improve our understanding of kink, and the quality of mental and medical healthcare for BDSM/kink people!

How many years have you been in a power exchange relationship?
Slave terry and I have been together for 15 years, and kind of discovered M/s and authority exchange together
Almost al long as we have been together, I collared slave terry December 10, 2006, and our first MAsT Meeting was February or 2007. Lady Lynette and I immediately hit it off, and I was the roustabout, dishwasher, man about town, and assistant Director until her untimely death in March of 2015. Per her wishes I became director at that time, and have continued in that position to date.
Friends, fellowship, opportunities to learn, teach, grow, reflect... the list goes on. One of the most important things I have learned is that while this life is a journey with a fixed destination, the paths to that destination are limited only by your imagination, and how much of yourself and your energy you are willing to invest.
What are some of the highlights in your power exchange journey?
Wow. First MsC in 2007. Attending MTTA in March of 2009, and slave terry attending the following slave class. In 2011 I attended, taught at, and was awarded to our knowledge the first public lifestyle event with a dungeon in Virginia. I was honored to receive the inaugural Master Taino "Walking the way of the Master," award at Colonial Kink, for "Outstanding Leadership in the BDSM Community." We founded The Castle of Three Kings, a "Leather Village" that could come together to accomplish larger projects than the component families.
On the evening of August 15, 2012 I was presented my own leather cover by my friend and Mentor, the lovely Lady Lynette, at a gathering of the tribe. I promised that as my journey continued, I would strive for pride without hubris, confidence without arrogance, and to act honorably and with integrity in all my actions. In November of 2012 Slave Terry and I competed for Northeast Master and slave, loosing by a fraction of a point, in the closest finish the contest had experienced. We were crushed and relieved, and may one day run again when we are ready.
In late 2014 we added a third. Girl kat, aka Charlotte, aka Lotte Marie was first allowed to wear my collar on Dec 30, 2014.
What’s a low moment in your power exchange journey and how did you recover or what did you learn from it?
There have been a few. Not winning NE M/s was hard, but we took a few steps back and looked at our lives and relationship, and decided that perhaps we weren't ready, and began working towards that next run. When girl kat moved to Florida to follow her dreams it was a huge challenge for all of us. We wrote and called, and terry was the rock that kept me steady. The most important thing I learned is that I can trust terry and kat, and they can trust me.
What’s an interesting fact about you that most people don’t know?
Growing up I was very active in my church's youth group, choir, and select ensemble. We did missions to New Mexico, the Choir sang all over the south, and we sang in Washington DC in 1976. During that trip I had breakfast with Bill and Hillary Clinton, then governor and First Lady of the state of Arkansas. I was supposed to be a Southern Baptist Tent Revival Preacher, and had been accepted to Moody Bible College.
Do you have any advice for people new to power exchange relationships or new chapter directors?
Communicate! Talk, call, write, email, text, all of the communications are useful. Don't let it go to your head. Confidence is good, arrogant is not.
What’s your favorite quote and why?
There is nothing happens to any person but what was in his power to go through with. - Marcus Aurelius
Anything else you’d like to add?
What a long, strange trip it's been. Learn widely, specialization is for insects. Love deeply, don't act or speak in anger. Read the classics, they are called that for a reason, and those who refuse to learn from the past are doomed to repeat it.
