Support Your Child’s Education from Home
Volunteering in the classroom is not always something parents can do. Luckily, it isn’t the only way to foster your child’s education. According to the National Education Association (NEA), here are four tips for what parents can do outside the classroom to help their child succeed.
- Create a home environment that encourages learning and schoolwork. Establish a daily routine of mealtimes with time for homework, chores, and bedtime.
- Reinforce learning at home and show your child the skills they’re learning are applicable to everyday life. For example, if your child is learning about measuring, bake with them in the kitchen and bring that skill to life.
- Let your child see you reading, writing, using math and technology.
- Read all information that comes from school (emails, flyers, etc.) to stay on top of what your child is learning.
From Superintendent Schreibeis
With the upcoming referendums, I thought I would just explain the difference between a bond and a levy. For more information about the HS Bond, HS Building Reserve Levy, and ELEM Building Reserve levy, please go to our website (www.glendiveschools.com). Thanks!
What is the difference between a levy and a bond?
The easiest way to think about it is that Levies are for Learning and Bonds are for Buildings.
LEVIES = LEARNING Environment
(Library Books, Curriculum, Staffing, Building Operation & Maintenance and Needed Improvements, etc.)
BONDS = BUILDINGS - Major Construction
(New Buildings, Major Renovations, etc.)
Levy - a ballot measure asking voters to agree to a property tax to collect a set dollar amount for a specific number of years. They are used for operational costs and capital improvements. Local levies bridge the gap between state funding and the true costs of operating a school district. There are many different types of levies. Some examples include: General Fund, Building Reserve, Transportation, Tuition, Technology, etc.
Replacement Levy - a levy asking voters to replace an existing levy that is scheduled to expire.
Bond - It is like a mortgage for the schools, except instead of borrowing from a bank, the district finances the cost of long-term projects through the municipal bond market. When placed before voters, the school district is asking for the authority to sell bonds and then pay the principal and interest on those bonds using money collected from property taxes. Bond proceeds are used to purchase or construct new buildings, renovate and modernize existing buildings, add or upgrade infrastructure systems, and purchase additional equipment. Bonds are used to finance the projects because the payments to the investors are made over a period of 12-30 years thus spreading the costs of the projects over a long period of time which reduces the annual impact on property taxes.
DCHS Updates From Principal Johnson
Over the past few months, quite a lot has happened at DCHS! December brought the end the of the first semester as well as a lot of events. 11 DCHS students went to the All Northwest Choir Festival in Bellevue, WA. The students had a great time and were excited to meet peers from the northwest with so much talent. Mrs. Svenvold continues to lead the best choir program in Montana! FCCLA held their first movie night as the club is trying to recruit new students. FFA had their District Contests in Miles City and will be sending 12 students to Great Falls from March 20th - 25th! Great job Mrs. Hoagland and her kids! Our DCHS Juniors are also gearing up for the ACT so please encourage them on!
We would like to welcome our new Social Studies student teacher Marissa Herbaugh!
WMS Updates from Principal Kennedy
WMS staff and students are excited about school resuming and academic schedule changes. With the start of the new year, our 7th/8th-grade boys’ basketball teams have enthusiastically kicked off their season. Recently, it was approved for 6th-graders to join our WMS Track Team. We are excited to offer this opportunity for our 6th-graders.
The second semester of the school year brings various state testing to schools. Students need to have a good night's sleep, breakfast, and parent/guardian encouragement to do their best to ensure students are able to perform their best. Thank you for your support!
LES Updates from Principal Buckley
The winter months were fast and furious at Lincoln Elementary. We had a lot of great activities going on, from the Christmas program to visits from various clubs from WMS and DCHS. Our students love interacting with the older students. Those students from WMS and DCHS are awesome when they come and visit LES. It is nice to have those students as role models for our Lincoln students.
We faced some challenges with the weather but our students and staff took it in stride and kept on rolling. I can't say enough good things about the staff and students at LES. We have great educators that challenge our students and our students step up to those challenges.
With the end of the 2nd quarter we had 60 students recognized with Bug Awards. These awards are for those students who earned Straight A's or brought up grades in any of their class subjects and did not have grades go down in any class subject. Everyone at LES is proud of these students.
JES Updates from Principal Coovert
We held our February parent teacher conferences and utilized the time to connect with the parents of our amazing students. At Jefferson, we completed 236 conferences in total. These are such a great opportunity to discuss growth our students have made and areas in which they can still grow. We love getting to celebrate our students with the people who love them most!
Special Services Update - from Director Val Hafele
Special Education
One of the biggest changes in recent years has been the implementation of the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA). This federal law requires that all students with disabilities receive a free and appropriate education in the least restrictive environment. This means that students with disabilities are placed in general education classrooms as much as possible and receive additional support services to help them succeed. We continuously work towards ensuring that all students with disabilities have access to the resources and support they need to succeed.
Our District has been working hard to comply with IDEA and to provide all students with the support they need. We continue to recruit special education teachers and support staff in our schools.
We invite all parents and community members to contact us if you have any questions or concerns about special education in our school. We are committed to working together to ensure that all students have the opportunity to succeed.
Title I
Title I is a federal program that provides funding to schools with high concentrations of students from low-income families. The goal of Title I is to ensure that all children have the opportunity to receive a high-quality education, regardless of their socioeconomic background.
We are working to increase our communication with families. One of the ways we are doing this is through a quarterly newsletter for families. This newsletter can be found on the school district's website.

NEW TEACHER HIGHLIGHTS (Each newsletter has been highlighting several of our new teachers this year)
Dorian Hrubes - 1st Grade Teacher
Educational/work background- I taught K-12 Music for three years before moving to Glendive. I have been a substitute teacher for the last 2 years before deciding to teach again. This is my first year teaching 1st grade.
- Goals for your new role/why you are excited about your new position- I am excited about teaching 1st grade because the kids are so excited about school and learning new things. I am also excited to be working with some amazing people.
- Your favorite part about working in education- I love watching the kids grow throughout the year and find joy in learning new things.
- Something about your life outside of work (your family, hobbies, etc.)- My husband and I have three kiddos, Aubrey, Parker and Logan. We all love to travel and spend time exploring new places together.
Danielle Wilcox - WMS Reading Teacher
I graduated from MSU Bozeman with a degree in Business marketing (GO CATS!) and have a masters in Secondary Education with an English concentration. I just moved back to Glendive from Denver, CO, where I was working as an academic advisor and instructor at a college. I am so very excited to get back into the K-12 classroom again! I love being able to work with students and build their knowledge and love of reading. There is something out there for everyone when it comes to reading, so my goal is to help students find what they enjoy. I love being able to work with the younger students and be a part of their educational journey. Our teachers can help shape our lives for years to come, and I love being able to be a part of that.
When I'm not teaching, I'm usually found reading (I know cliche for the reading teacher), hiking around with my fiance and our pets, or listening to records. We have a dog (Angel) and a cat (Lupin) who make our house very lively at all hours of the day. My fiance grew up down in Denver so I'm enjoying exposing him to all Glendive has to offer. It's good to be back!
Keaton Anderson - LES PE Teacher
My goal for my new role is to help get kids excited about physical education and to recognize the importance of health and fitness.
I’m excited to learn and grow as an educator and to get to know each one of my students, fellow teachers, and community members.
My favorite part about working in education is building new relationships and helping my students set and reach their goals.
I graduated from Montana State University with a degree in Health Enhancement, after I changed my major a few times.
Outside of school I love participating in sports and recreational activities such as hunting and fishing.
Phillip Reed - 12th Grade English Teacher
My name is Philip Reed. I'm the new 12th Grade English teacher. I have a bachelor's degree in English Literature and Creative Writing from the University of Montana and a masters degree in Curriculum and Instruction from MSU-Billings. I also taught ESL in South Korea for a number of years. My family and I just moved back to Glendive after spending the last five years in Lincoln where I taught 7-12 English. I started my formal public school teaching career here in Glendive in 2015-2017 teaching 10th Grade English. Before I began teaching I served in the U.S. Army for 6 years as an armor crewman.
My goal as a teacher is to continually improve in my craft as a teacher so, when students leave my class they have a sense of wonder and the skills they need to continually ask the questions and seek the answers. I want to think critically and solve problems. I want to see them continue to grow as healthy individuals who work to make the world a better place; who know who they are and how they can best serve others.
My favorite part about working in education are the opportunities afforded me to make connections with some fine young people who teach me as much as I teach them. I like to remind my students that I'm never the smartest person in the room. I'm just the one with the most experience. I get to work with young adults who have amazing futures ahead of them and it gives me hope in a world that is facing so many challenges.
Outside of work I spend time with my family. I am here with my wife and two kids, a fourth grader at Lincoln and a second grader at Jefferson. I also spend a lot of time reading and writing and walking the dog.
Caleb Swanson - WMS Dean of Students
Educational / work background
I received my bachelors in elementary education from Grand Canyon University and my masters in Education Leadership from Montana State University Bozeman. Go Cats go!
I started my career in education in December of 2017 while pursuing my bachelors degree in elementary education. I began work as a paraprofessional at Washington Middle School in Miles City. In 2019, I took a position as a fourth grade teacher at Lincoln Elementary School in Miles City. For the 2020-2021 school year, I taught 7th grade at Sacred Heart Parish School in Miles City. During the 2021-2022 school year, I taught 7th and 8th grade science at Washington Middle School in Miles City.
I also coached middle school football in Miles City from 2018 through 2021 and basketball in 2021.
Prior to working in education, I was a sheriff’s deputy and detective for thirteen years in central California.
I am also a proud veteran of the United States Marine Corps. Semper Fi!
Goals / Why I’m excited about my position.
I know this sounds corny, but I got into this job to improve student outcomes. This position puts me in a better position to make a bigger impact.
My favorite part about working in education:
I love seeing that eureka moment when something clicks with a student. The moment where all of the instruction comes together. I enjoy seeing students years later and witnessing the person they are becoming.
Life outside of work:
I love reading books. I am an avid reader and usually read 6-8 books per month. I love to travel. My family and I have taken trips out of the country over the last couple of years and have had a blast. I have a passion for coaching football. The biggest sacrifice taking this position was giving up coaching. I hope to someday find my way back to the football field.
Wendy Jensen - WMS Math/ STEM Teacher
Educational/work background - BS Business Administration after high school. Married with kids,
decided to go back and get a BS Secondary Education - Business. Taught Junior High/High School Keyboarding, Computers, Business and K-12 HPE in Grass Range for eight years. Took a couple years off to be Assistant Finance Director then Finance Director at Head Start in Lewistown. I missed teaching so went back to school to add a Math Endorsement. Taught Junior High/High School Math and HPE for four years in Roy.
Goals for new role/why excited about new position – I have only taught in small schools, which I really enjoyed but I wanted the challenge of bigger classes. I want to get to know all of my students and find different ways to reach all of them. Step out of my comfort zone and try new ways. We have a great support system in our school and I know I can go to any one of them and get suggestions.
Favorite part about working in education – Students and staff and I love the subject. I subbed a year in the district and it wasn’t enough for me. I wanted to be back in my own classroom everyday doing what I love.
Life outside of work – My husband and I moved here to be with our grandkids. My mom and dad were a big part of our children’s lives and we wanted that. We are very lucky to be able to do that.
Ashley Shaw - JES SpEd Teacher
I am Ashlee Shaw, and I was born and raised in Savage, Mt. I have been married to my husband, Ben, for 14 years. We have two children, Braxton and Kaitlynn. I started subbing at Savage Public School when my son started preschool. I applied full time, at Savage, for a one-on-one aide paraprofessional in the resource room. I was a paraprofessional for 7 years in the resource room and decided to go back to college for my Elementary and Special Education degrees. When it came time for my student teaching portion, I reached out to Valerie Damron, and she assigned me to Jefferson Elementary School. I loved the new atmosphere and the wonderful staff at Jefferson and applied for a Special Education position. I was hired and started teaching in my own classroom in January.
My goal for my classroom is to help my students be successful while in my classroom and after they leave my room. I have a passion for Special Education and truly love my job. I love the challenges that it brings and finding how each student learns. I strive to help them find confidence in themselves and show them how to be successful. I am excited to have my own classroom and bring my passion and experience for special education to Jefferson.
I have always loved working in the school system. It is such a challenging but rewarding profession. I love when I finally figure out what a student needs to be successful and you see the excitement and joy radiating through them. That pushes me to work harder and find different ways to teach my students so they can all have that feeling of accomplishment.
Outside of teaching, I am always doing something with my family. Most of the time, we are traveling for our son’s sports. He is a freshman this year, and I love watching him and supporting him and his team. Our daughter is a Junior this year, and is busy with work and school. My family all lives in Savage, so we get together quite often and are always doing something outdoors, like BBQs, hunting, and fishing.
