Canby High School Family Newsletter
For the Week of May 26th through June 1st, 2022
Principal's Message
Good afternoon Canby High School Students and Families!
We are heartbroken over the tragedy that took place in a Uvalde, Texas elementary school yesterday. It’s hard to put words around it. One thing we know is that each of us will respond differently to this event with feelings like anxiety, rage, and sadness, or with physical symptoms.
The same is true for our students. They will each respond differently and have different needs. We know it can be difficult to talk to children about violence, but as parents, there are resources available to help you. The American School Counselor Association recommends trying to keep routines as normal as possible and limiting exposure to television and the news, but being honest with kids and sharing as much information as they are developmentally able to handle. The number one tip from the National Association of School Psychologists is to reassure children that they are safe.
Please understand that, at Canby School District, we are doing everything in our power to ensure our students are safe while attending school. Safety has been at the forefront of our minds and will continue to be. But most importantly, know that our educators care about your children and treat them as their own while they are at school.
Should you or your child need additional resources during this time, please feel free to reach out.
We have less than three weeks to go before the end of school. Students, please connect with your teachers if you have questions about grades and assignments. Our final exam schedule is published below. Let’s finish strong, Canby!
There’s a lot to talk about as our athletic season wraps up!
Congratulations to our Boys Track Team, who finished fourth in state last week! Tommy O’Neil won state in the 800 m, breaking the school record. Trey Wakefield broke the school record and won the triple jump, with Drew Pierson coming in a close 2nd. Koby Kessler earned 4th in high jump and Drew Pierson got 8th in long jump.
The state meet for OHSET was last weekend, and once again Canby did not disappoint. All of the below qualified for regionals:
Sadie Schweitzer: 3rd place in Hand Trail, 3rd place in Showmanship, 3rd place in Dressage
Madison Wheeler and Sadie Schweitzer: 5th place in Team Sorting
Hannah Smith, Hailey Magenheimer, Sadie Schweitzer, Madison Wheeler: 5th place in Team versatility
Hailey Magenheimer, Madi Bigej, Sadie Schweitzer, Madison Wheeler: 1st place in Freestyle 4s Drill (here’s the video of their state champion performance)
Softball lost a tough first round playoff to South Medford 7-4; baseball defeated Bend 2-1 and will take on South Medford today at 5pm.
Our Trap team took first place in conference for the 2022 Spring Season! For the girls, Rylie Sullivan took first in conference, Hollie Lopez second, and Hailey McClaugherty took third. For the boys, Brandon Slater took second in conference. Great job Trap team!
Lacrosse won their first round playoff game against West Salem on Friday. Last night they faced a tough Sunset team and lost 14-6. Great season lacrosse!
A couple of reminders… There is no school on Monday, 5/30, due to Memorial Day Holiday. Also, as the weather gets warmer, everyone wears fewer clothes. We encourage all students to be aware of and follow our dress code. Clothing should not be a distraction to the educational process.
Finally, next week is graduation. Seniors, follow your emails and our website for the latest info. After the Senior Awards assembly on Thursday at 11:30am, we’ll be dedicating our Senior Park (See pictures below.) All are invited!
Have a good week. And Go Cougars!

Graduation All-Night Party (GAP)
Please help us celebrate the Canby High School Class of 2022 by signing up to volunteer at the Senior "GAP" All NIght Party on Friday, June 3rd. We need as many volunteers as possible to make this an amazing event for our graduates. Senior parents are more than welcome to sign up to help, but we also need parents who do not have seniors. Think of volunteering at this event as paying it forward. Volunteering gives the senior parents a chance to attend graduation, and visit with family and friends who might be visiting for graduation. Then when it's your students turn to graduate, other parents will do the same for you.
When signing up, please make sure that you add an email and a phone number. I will be sending out reminders as we get closer to the event. The location will not be disclosed until a couple of days before the event, because we want to surprise the student, but know that it is within a half an hour drive.
If you have any questions, please feel free to email Amber Bedortha at canbyamber@yahoo.com.
Athletics
Our annual Multi-Sport Awards Ceremony will be Wednesday, June 1st at 7:30am. It will be at the stadium, weather permitting. We will honor our three sport athletes, senior athlete and scholar athlete award winners, as well as the NFHS Award of Excellence for our seniors.

Attendance and Sick Students
To ensure the accuracy and efficiency of our attendance process, please remember the following guidelines:
To report an absence, call our attendance line at 503-263-7210 or email chs-attendance@canby.k12.or.us.
Please report an absence as soon as possible and no later than 48 hours after the absence.
If your student needs to leave class for an appointment, inform the attendance office as soon as possible. This will help us ensure that your student receives a note to leave class in a timely manner.
Remember that attendance matters and students who attend class regularly are more likely to stay on track, graduate on time, learn deeply, and get the most from their high school experience.
