Call to Action: Phone Banking

The General Assembly has filed multiple bills to eliminate payroll deductions of any dues for public employees. We need people to volunteer to make phone calls to region 1B members who have not signed up for EFT bank draft. Please email burkencae@gmail.com to assist in this endeavor. The date for phone banking are May 26 & 28 and June 2, 4, 9, & 11.

Phone banking can be done in the comfort of your home. If you can call any number of people your assistance is needed and appreciated.

Bills NCAE Opposes

House Bill 662 proposes to implement a differentiated pay plan and would direct the State Board of Education to contract with a non-profit to administer a program where school districts implement advanced teaching roles and pay systems for classroom teachers. NCAE believes the funds would be better if used to fix base pay for teachers.

Senate Bill 480 proposes to limit educator advocacy on educational issues. The first standard on a teacher's evaluation is directly related to advocating for students and public schools. North Carolina Teacher Evaluation Process Standard I (page 8):

“Teachers advocate for schools and students”

House Budget Proposal is a 2% across the board pay raise for teachers and ESP (education support personnel). It also increases text book funds by 46 million which is still below 2008 levels. Teacher Appreciation

Burke NCAE gives a members a carwash at the new Sam's Xpress in Morganton. We cleaned up our membership!

Members serving our Community

NCAE member, Teresa Pruitt, with students who won the American Legion Auxiliary Americanism Essay. Pruitt donates her time as the Valdese American Legion Auxiliary chaplain and serves as an Area Representative for NCAE. She served on the essay contest committee to help decide the winners of this year's essay titled, "What Does Freedom Mean to My Family".

Rally Day

About 50 NCAE and SENC members participated in a rally at the Morganton Courthouse Square on April 18. Speakers from these groups spoke on the importance of being unified for the cause of keeping North Carolina strong for our future. Mark Jewell enthralled the assembled with his final statement, "Let us link arms together to make change. We will not let them outnumber us."
