Weekly Update ~ May 6, 2019
Happy Teacher Appreciation Week!
This week we all celebrate the gifts our teachers and support staff share with our students at Oak Grove. We are so very fortunate to have such a dedicated group of individuals who give their very best each and every day to to help your sons and daughters learn and grow, in and out of the classroom. There is simply no way that the administration, the students, the parents, and all others in our community can properly say “thank you” for all that they do each and every day for our children.
This is my 37th year as an educator and I can honestly say that I am blessed to work with the best faculty and staff in the entire state. Great things happen at Oak Grove School on a daily basis. I have the utmost confidence that your children will be well prepared not only for high school, but for whatever path life takes them down, because of the lessons they have learned here.
Our staff is the "heart and soul" of Oak Grove. If you get a moment this week, thank a teacher, a paraprofessional, a custodian, a nurse (today is also Nurse's Appreciation Day!), any of the classroom, tech, library, lunchroom or other support staff, or our awesome administrative professionals. We have an amazing family at "The Grove!"
Curriculum Corner
Hello Oak Grove Community,
For the last two years, the curriculum review cycle looked at middle school social studies resources for grades 6-8. The teachers participated in a product review day with vendor presentations. Teachers completed comprehensive rubrics which then determined which products would continue to be looked at through a pilot period. At the conclusion of each pilot, teachers reflected again on the rubric to add additional details of information. After all pilots had been completed, additional teacher feedback was requested. After reviewing the rubrics, alignment to the state standards, and ability to meet the district's mission of providing daily differentiated instruction, product decisions were presented as initial recommendations for purchase at the April Board Of Education meeting.
The next step in the review cycle is to receive stakeholder feedback about the potentially purchased resources before the final recommendation is made to the Board Of Education. If you are interested in reviewing the social studies resources, they will be available in the District Office, May 6th through the 17th, from 8 am - 4:30 pm.
K-5 Free Coding Event, May 9th
Oak Grove students currently enrolled in grades kindergarten through fifth grade have been invited to participate in a Coding Event with a hands-on activity and door prizes, being held at Hand2Mind located in Vernon Hills on Thursday, May 9th from 4-6 pm. Learn how to integrate computational thinking and engage students with simple robots. Registration is free but limited. If you are interested having your student attend, please see the flyer in the virtual backpack for the registration link.
Language Selection Choice for Incoming Sixth Graders
Believe it or not, it’s time to start thinking about next year… and the two years after that! The 6th grade French and Spanish teachers talked to your child recently about the World Language program in grades 6-8 at Oak Grove. Your child has a choice of two languages: Spanish and French. Both languages start at a Level 1 in sixth grade. Your child will have a language class each day of the week as a regular core class for 42 minutes (similar to a science or math class). Once they choose a language, the student will continue with that language through 8th grade. Please talk to your child about the choice, then fill out THIS VERY SHORT FORM and submit it. PLEASE RESPOND BY FRIDAY, MAY 10th so we can begin planning for the next school year!

Teacher Appreciation Week
Teacher Appreciation Week is this week! All of us at Oak Grove School are beyond fortunate to have our incredible teachers nurturing and guiding the children in our community. Please take a moment to have your child write their teacher(s) a special note letting them know what an important role they play in your child's life. This could be something new that was learned, a silly memory, their favorite thing about them, even a drawing would be wonderful. You can also click the link below if you would prefer to print this form off for your child to fill in, or to just use it as a guide. Your child should bring their letter(s) to school on any day during the week of 5/6 and give it to their teacher. It will give them something to make them smile all week long!
