Giving Thanks
November is the month of giving thanks and at SHS we have lots to be thankful for; dedicated faculty and staff, amazing class opportunities, plethora of clubs/activities/sports/drama/music, a gorgeous building and campus and students who give back to their community, grow and learn each day and work to improve themselves and the world around them are just a few of the things we are grateful for at SHS. Not only is November the month of thanks it is also a month of school spirit, celebrations, competitions, and the pep rally! So much to look forward to in November and for which to give thanks.
November is a short month with lots of school spirit activities. During the week before Thanksgiving, each class competes to win Spirit Week. Student Council designates each day to a different theme, such as class color day, black and orange day, and other creative themes. During the first block of each day, teachers count the number of students in each grade who particiapted in the theme that day. These tallies go towards the number of points each class earns during the week. Other competitions include a food drive, clothing drive, and penny wars, which provide points towards spirit week, but more importantly provide donations to local charities for our community. The week culminates with a huge pep rally in which the school gets pepped for the annual Thanksgiving game, class Spirit Walls are hung and voted on, fall sports are recognized, students participate in some crowd pleasing games, and the marching band, color guard, X-clusive Knights, cheerleaders and Powder Puff cheerleaders all perform. Sometimes there are surprise performances as well. The gym rocks with incredibly positive energy. It is an exciting time to be a Knight!
Last month, SHS held it's first Higher Education Fair. Over 500 parents, guardians and students attended the fair to learn about options for after high school. We had representatives from over 35 colleges, universities, technical education, and two and four year schools. Hosted by the SHS School Counseling department, Ms. Ashley Guba, the College and Career Counselor, spearheaded this event to provide our community with the information they need to put together post high school plans. Thank you to all our partners, Ms. Guba, and the School Counseling Team for bringing this opportunity to Stoughton families.
SHS in partnership with the Stoughton Parents of Performing Students (POPS) hosted its first US Bands Competion in October. Although it was a rainy night, five bands took to the field to perform. The US Bands personnel paid high compliments to POPS and SHS for the fantastic show planning, preparation, atmosphere and facilities. The SHS marching band gave an amazing perfomance and received high marks! Thank you to Mr. Mange, the Music Department and Staff, our grounds and custodial staff, POPs and our performing arts students for a wonderful experience.
SHS Athletics has joined the 400+ Massachusetts schools who offer a Unified Sports Program. Unified Sports "brings together athletes with and without intellectual disabilities to train and compete on the same team. Participants improve their physical fitness, sharpen their skills and learn acceptance and inclusion." (Special Olympics Website). Stoughton has entered the arena with a Basketball team this fall. Coached by Special Education Teacher, Ms. Liz Londergan, managed by Ms. Carolan Sampson, we have seven athletes and four player assistants. The games bring incredible joy to our athletes and fans! Thank you to Mr. Robin Ireland, Athletic Director, Ms. Londergan, Ms. Sampson, our student athletes, and our student assistants for bringing this amazing experience to our community and to our Black Knight fans for cheering along the sidelines.
