The SHS varsity baseball team won four of its first five games in April. The Cards started the month with a 3-2 win over Mt. Vernon. Sophomore AJ Short dominated on the mound, giving up just one run and striking out 15 through 6 ⅔ innings. Sophomore Jack Vanover and senior Joey Lemons each had two hits.

After a 7-3 loss at Austin (that featured a 10-strikeout performance on the mound by Vanover), the team swept a double-header (7-2 and 8-6) at defending Class A state runner-up Lanesville. In game 1, sophomore Nick Lynn had two RBIs to lead the offense and senior Quinton Mosley and junior Kris Massey (who picked up the win) combined to strike out 11 on the mound. In game 2, Vanover and Short each had two hits and two RBIs. Massey pitched three more shutout innings and recorded the save.

The Cards then tallied an 11-1 conference-opening win against Franklin Central. Senior Chris Cox had three hits and three RBIs, and Short picked up the win, giving up one earned run while striking out nine through five innings.

Unfortunately, the hot streak ended there. The Cards were swept in a double header against Decatur Central (7-0 and 7-5) despite two hits each in game 2 from Cox, seniors Dustin Church and Keaton Moore, and junior Pa’Tyn Pardue.

The team then lost to rival Perry Meridian, 1-0, a game that featured another great performance from Short (6 IP, one earned run and seven strikeouts). The Cards are now 4-5 overall.

In Conference Indiana Baseball action last night, The Cards beat Columbus North 3-1 to secure a bearth in the Championship bracket of the Conference Indiana Tournament. Avery Short picked up the complete game win striking out 8 and only allowing 1 run. Chris Cox and Big Joe Lemons both had multiple hits for the Cardinals. Dustin Church drove in the go ahead run in the top of the 7th.

The Lady Cards lost to 4th ranked New Palestine by a score of 8-3. Erniey Hursey led the offense by going 3-4 with a run scored and an RBI. She also made a great defensive play robbing a home run in the seventh inning.

The Lady Cards defeated Warren Central 12-2 in 6 innings. Alie Weaver led the offense going 2-3 with an RBI and 2 runs scored. Brittany Fisher and Abby Pendleton combined to strike out 8 and only allow 1 earned run. This brought the record to 2-2 on the season.

The Varsity softball team split a double header with New Castle. The first game was a 6-2 defeat. Savannah Doane and Erniey Hursey led the offense, each hitting a solo HR. The Lady Cards won the second game 10-5. Carlee Rees went 4-4 with 2 doubles and 3 runs scored to lead the Cards on offense. Abby Pendleton picked up her 3rd win of the year on the mound. The Cards are now 4-4 on the year.

The Lady Cardinals went on the road and defeated Brownsburg by a score of 1-0. Erniey Hursey provided all of the offense in the first inning with her 3rd home run of the year. Abby Pendleton threw a complete game shut out. The Lady Cards are now 5-4 on the year.

The Lady Cardinals showed tremendous fight in overcoming a 10 run deficit after 2 innings to rally and beat Whiteland 12-11 in 8 innings. Savannah Doane and Erniey Hursey started the comeback with 2 RBI hits in the 4th inning. Alie Weaver continued the comeback in the 5th with a 3-RBI triple. Also contributing were Vanessa Miller with 3 hits and 2 RBI and Carlee Rees with 2 hits and 3 runs scored. Brittany Fisher picked up her second win of the year in relief.

Several Southport Trackmen represented Southport High School at the Midwest Prep Invitational, a large invite that includes teams from all over the state of Indiana and surrounding states, too. Senior Andrew Mappes brought home 3 medals, placing 3rd in the 100m dash, running a leg on the 6th place 4x400m relay team, and winning the 200m dash.

Senior Brock Layne also had an impressive day, placing 4th overall in the 110m high hurdles and 4th overall in the 400m hurdles, a collegiate event. Coach Geller's influence was easy to see in his performance. Brock also ran a season best split on the 6th place 4x400m relay. Like Mappes, he brought home 3 medals.

Junior Michael Crook finished 2nd in the 3200m dash, bringing home some hardware.

Junior Justice Demers placed in the top 5 in the 200m dash and also ran a season best on the 4x400m relay that placed 6th overall.

Senior Dominick Farino ran a PR as an anchor on the 6th place 4x400m relay, bringing home a medal that will look good on his jacket.

The girls track team defeated Tech 104-28.

The first match of the year was against the Hornets of Beech Grove High School. The Cards showed them around the home course of Southern Dunes. Southport came away with the victory, 173-218. The low scorer for the Cards was Luke Manning with a 41.

At the Cardinal Ritter Invite at Eagle Creek, the Cards placed 7th out of 12 teams.

The team hosted Ben Davis on the 17th and came away with the victory by a score of 173-206. Individual scores include Bryan Fox - 40, Luke Manning - 42, Davis Chan - 45, Matt Munoz - 46, and Jaylen McCall - 46. Great job Cards!

In the Marion County tournament at Winding River, the guys picked up an 8th place finish out of 16 teams.

The girls traveled to Decatur Central. All five varsity positions won in straight sets.

The Cards faced the Warriors of Warren central in their next match. The same result occurred with another 5-0 victory, all in straight sets.

Against Lawrence Central, the girls were pushed a little harder. After a slow start at a few positions, the girls pulled away for a 4-1 victory.

The ladies traveled to Whiteland to take on the Warriors. The positions went into three sets. Several sets finished 6-4 or 4-6, and one set even saw a tie breaker. The girls persevered and came away with a 3-2 victory. Those three spots were at #1 singles and #1 & #2 doubles.

The Cards took on conference opponent Franklin Central. This was a tough test for the girls. They dropped their first match of the year, 1-4.

Next up on the schedule, the girls battled Martinville. At #1 & #2 singles, there was a true battle. Both matches went to three sets. The Cards fell 2-3 to the Artesians.

Against Mooresville, the girls struggled to get things going. All five spots faced tough opponents. The girls lost 0-5.

The girls hosted Ben Davis. The girls came out slow but turned it on. With the score tied 2-2, the number one doubles team of Rachel Dean and Aubrey Popovic battled to a third set and sealed the win for the Cards.

To round out the month, the girls battled Perry Meridian. The Cards defeated the Falcons 4-1. Wins came at #2 singles, #3 singles, #1 doubles, and #2 doubles.

The Cardinals competed in their first ever Unified Track & Field competition. Roncalli hosted Perry Meridian and Southport. We had so much fun and are extremely proud of our athletes and partners.

Next up, the Unified team joined the boys and girls track teams from Perry Meridian and Southport for the dual meet on the 25th. The weather was perfect and the meet was even better. Athletes and partners from both teams competed in the 100M run, the 400M run, the 4 X 100 relay, the shot put, and the long jump.

Micah Walker signed his National Letter of Intent to play football at the collegiate level. Walker will attend Wabash College in the fall. (My apologies for the direction of the footage in the video)

Drew Shellenberger is a National Champion! Drew competed in the USA triathlon in Tuscaloosa, Alabama. He dominated the field to win by 1 minute and 41 seconds, with a time of 1:02:35. He was the youngest finisher in the top 25.

Erin Sullivan was honored by the Indiana High School Athletic Association. She was one of 13 student athletes from around the state to receive the Cato Memorial Scholarship. Congratulations Erin!

Sophomore Vanessa Miller has verbally committed to play softball at the collegiate level. She will continue her career as a Cardinal, only this time for the University of Louisville.
